Worthy In More Than One Sense.
The Portland Symphony Orchestra, one of tEe foremost or
ganizations of its kind in America, was brought to the campus last
year to participate in the dedication ceremony of the new Woman’s
building. After the dedication had been completed and the ac
counting of finances began, it was found that there was left to the
Woman’s League a deficit of 0500 which had to be raised in some
manner. " i
The merit of the symphony orchestra need not be commented on
at length, it was the first attempt which has ever been made on -the
campus to bring such an organization to the students. The support
was not sufficient to warrant another such attempt in the near
fueure.
As a means of meeting their deficit, the Woman’s League has
taken up the project of presenting three artists of prominence in the
musical world in concerts during the present term. KJyrena Van
Gordon, prima donna mezzo-contralto of the Chicago Grand Opera
Company; J. Irwin Mutch, baritone soloist, and Dean J. J. Lauds
bury, pianist, are the artists who have been secured for this series.
The Woman’s League is not playing upon the fact that the stu
dents should attend these concerts for the purpose of aiding the or
ganization to meet their deficit. But the idea in mind was to bring
to the students a program of exceptional quality and one that can
be considered well worth the money which may be paid for it.
Their action should be commended, they have not lost sight of
the fact that the students should not be preyed upon by cheap and
shoddy entertainment. They have instead carefully selected a pro
gram which will be in keeping with the principles for which the Wo
man's League and other organizations on the campus, take a stand.
The Woman’s League has accomplished a worthy undertaking in
bringing these artists to the campus. The cause for which they have
been secured is a worthy cause.
