Force Acts Differently On Different Conditions. DR. BUSH CLAIMS PROOF Contention May Change Laws of Newton and Einstein. Tlte “man in the street” needn’t be bothered by the recent discovery of Dr. Charles F. Brush, of Celevland, that gravity acts differently under certain circumstances, according to Dr. A. E. Caswell, professor of physics at the Uni versity, who smilingly gives assurance that for all practical purposes the world will go on just the same. Dr. Brush wras recently quoted as say ing that ho had developed the theory conclusively, as the result of exhaustive experiment, that gravity acts differently on different substances. This discovery was said to revolutionize the Newtonian theory of gravitation, as well as Ein stein’s contentions. The proper state ment of this* discovery, according to Dr. Caswell, is that gravity acts differently when different mediums are put in its path. Principles Well Known. “The new discovery,” said Dr. Caswell, “merely ep.plies to gravity some of the principles which are well known in mag netism and electricity. Dr. Brush has discovered that there is a slight differ ence in the force of gravitation in acting j through iwo different substances, such as air and ether. “A good analogy is the magnetic field. The force is different, when a substance such as iron is placed in the field. But regardless of this, the rule for measure ment holds true—the strength of the field being inversely proportional to the square of the distnnee, and directly pro portional to the product of the magnetic charge.” The same rule applies in the case of gravity. The rule is still true, hilt the discovery that the medium makes a dif ference will mean thnt a corrective cal culation must be made. Practical Effect Slight. “But for us,” said Dr. Caswell, “the knowledge of this variation is of little practical concern. In figuring gravita tional differences between the earth and moon and on the earth itself, these cor rections would have to be made, but when we do our figuring upon the earth itself, there is no variation, for all our figuring is done in the same medium.” The statement was made by Dr. A. G. Webster, of Clark University, that the new discovery was “more revolutionary than the Russian soviet.” Dr. Caswell believes that this radical change will only apply to intensely scientific fields, and is far removed from contact with the practical. Dr. Caswell does not hold that the new discovery destroys any formerly ac cepted principles, although he says that this was the general conclusion, jumped at when the discovery of Dr. Brush was first announced. Dr. Caswell classes it more in the nature of augmentation of the existing theories in lines which Were already known to be applicable to other natural sciences. FISH WINS AT ORATORY Sophomore to Represent Oregon at Northwest Contest. Charles Fish, a sophomore in the Uni versity, from Sprague, Wash., won in the tryout for the northwestern orator ical contest held Thursday night. Only two speakers tried out, Fish and Abe Rosenberg, a former winner of the con test. Fish will represent Oregon at the University of Washington on May 27. Washington, Oregon. Idaho and possibly Montana will take part this year. The event was Won last year by Fred Coley, of Oregon. None of the details of his address have been arranged yet. This is the first work of this kind that Fish has done on the campus. PRIZE UP FOR SKETCHES. The school of architecture is offering ns prizes the two remaining sketches of L. C. Rosenberg’s for the best “small modern bank,” by a junior, and the best “two-storied portico,” by a sophomore. Prize winners of the last competition will be barred from these awards. GUESTS ARE WELL FED. At the end of Fern Murphy’s five-day term serving luncheons for five dollars in the home economics department, all of her guests are of the same opinion, that they have been “very well fed.” Majors in this department are taking their turn in this serving.
