FISH no OUT OF Tf EE CONTESTS Defeat Pacific University and 0. A. C. Rooks. BACKFIELD MEN SHINE Good Prospects for Next Year’s Varsity Uncovered. 'Two out of three games won and the tlTrd lost by *he narrow marg n of one point is the record made by the fresh man football team which closed a very successful season by defeating the O. A. C. Ilooks in the final game. All through the season they played good football, and their work was far above that of the average Frosh team. The Frosh had a special advantage in having two coaches as good as “Ken” Bartlett and “Raz” Williams. Each was a football man at the University ip 3 former years, both playing on the var sity team which defeated Penn at Pasa dena in 1016 and the dhe which played against. Harvard in 1020. Bartlett hand led the baekfield work for the Frosh while “Bass” worked with tin: linemen. Coaches Are Handicapped. The coaches were handicapped by (he fad that there were so many new men to work with it was 'impossible to get a line on the ability of each man until the season was well advanced. For this mason there were many shifts, and the final line-up was not evolved until short ly before the game with the Rooks. An other factor which will aid the frosh next year when they try for varsity po sitions will be that Bartlett and Wil liams both played the style of game that Huntington teaches and the frosh will not have to begin all over, and learn a new system. The first real game of the season for the freshmen was the one with Pacific at Eugene. The week before Pacific bad succeeded in beating the Rooks. The Frosh were able to send them home on the short end of 24 to 7 score. The second game was lost to Chcmawa. The Frosh played the Indians on their own field and lost 10 to 0. The Indians were able to put over the winning score short ly before the end of the game. There was little dope out prior to the Frosh Rnok contest as the Rooks had beaten Chcmawa who had won from Oregon and the Frosh had beaten the Pacific “U” men who had'defeated the Rooks. ' The game was played in Eugene Armis tice day and was won by the Frosh 12 to 0. It was a battle from start to finish, neither team slackening until the final whistle. I Baekfield Is Strong. There arc a number of men on (lie Frosli team who will have good dinners; at the varsity next year. It is itndouba edly a fact that the Frosli baekfield was far better than the line. At the end of the season the line was beginning to hold, but it was the baekfield that won j the games. For first year men the backs played very well. They were not afraid to dive "on interference, and when they carried the hull they charged for all they were worth. Halfback Parsons looks good for next year. He is a twistiing, squirming, plunging back, heavy enough so that lie is very hard to down and he is never down until several men of the other team are sitting on his chest. He is equally good at broken field running -and at line buck ing. And he can also kick fairly well. Burton is another good halfback pros pect for the varsity. He was out of game with an injured shoulder during the first part of the season and no one know what he could do. When he did get in lo the game though everyone recognized him as a real player. His punts aver aged about ,'15 yards, and he is a good line plunger. His greatest handicap is his lack of weight. Burton was the cap tain of the Frosli aggregation this sea son. Chapman was (he quarter for the team. He is u heady player, shifty and fast and knows how to run the team. He is a brother of “N'isli” Chapman. Ore gon's varsity left half of this year. Johnson Good at Center. Johnson was tlu» full back and he is also a good man. His greatest fault seems to he in his lack of ability to fol low his interference. lie hits like a ton of brick, but he is liable to run against a solid wall, instead of picking the hole. "Bill" Johnson at* center looks good to fill the shoes of “Brick” Leslie next vear. "Bill" has had lots of football ex perience and shows it. Tie played like n veteran this year, and was far the best Frosli center. The other linemen are not so good. They were all fighters and several of them may make good with more experience, but they did not show the class of the hacks. Kel King, at tackle, was one that was good, lb' is big and a fighter from the whistle, Ih'g iiiitti at end also has a good eh'auee. His handicap is that lie is not fast enough If be can only gain a little speed he will make good. Whipple at the other end was handicapped by his size. Tie is small for the varsity. McKeown at guard may have a chance after he learns the game. He is big enough, weighing over 200. but lie is inexperienced. Coach Hart left said that he was well satisfied with the way the Frosh played ! (his year. DOUGLASS AUTHOR OF TESTS, j T'rofessor Harl It. Douglass, director of the University high school, is (lie author of an achievement test in algebra, for high schools. The test is desired from Irial^with 05N students in M high schools, in five states. It is now being published, and will be handled through (he bureau of educational tests, under the direction of Dr. C. A. Gregory, pro fessor of education, flails for Professor Douglass’ test have come from Rose lnirg. Baker and other towns in the state. MISS SIBBALD’S MOTHER DIES.
