    TRIAL GIVEN CARNOT
DERATING SYSTEM IN
COOS BAY SCHOOLS
Speakers May Take Either Side
of Question; Judged
Individually
The Carnot system of debate, used
extensively in California, where it
has proved popular, is unique but has
its disadvantages through lack of a
clash between speakers, was a state
ment of Professor Robert W. Pres
cott, secretary of the Oregon High
School Debating league, in announc
ing that for the first time in Oregon
the Carnot system is being tried out
by the Coos Bay district this year.
Under the Carnot system all speak
ers prepare on the question as a
whole. One hour before the debate
begins .a list of subdivisions of the
question is handed each debater, and
it is around these that he must make
his talk. A speaker may choose \
either side of the question and each
debater will b$ judged by his in
dividual work.
Lack of a incentive due to the
lack of verbal clash may hinder |
some debaters, Mr. Prescott believes, I
and an audience which is seeking §
something than information may be |
disappointed in the new system.
Following is the Carnot system as
explained in detail by Professor
Prescott:
1. Contestants are free to defend
either side of the question that best
suits them. Both sides might take
the negative or both the affirmative.
2. Each contestant prepares one
whole question so as to be able to
discuss any phase that may be given.
3. Previous to the debate an anly
sis is made by some competent and
disinterested party in which the pro
position is broken up into leading
issues or questions of fact.
4. An hour previous to the debate
these questions of fact are distributed
to the several members of the team
so that all of questions in the course
of tlie debate will be handled.
5. The judges rank the speakers
not as a team but as individuals,
giving first to that man who handles
his particular topic in the most able
manner, and second to the next best
man, and so on. The decision is given
to that team which has the highest
summation of points.
STUDENTS GIVE RECITAL
VOCAL AND VIOLIN NUMBERS
PRESENTED
First of Series of Musicals Greeted
by a Large Audience at <
Guild Hall
Before a large uutl appreciative au
dience the advanced vocal and violin
students of the school of music were
presented in a recital Wednesday
evening in Guild hall. This was the
first of the student recitals to bo
given during the term and was mark
ed by ability, technique and train
ing. Each number was presented
with an understanding and sympathy
that showed the ability of both pupil
and instructor. Although the pro
gram was composed mostly of vocal
numbers the violin selection by Al
berta Potter deserves special praise.
Owing to the absence of the other
violinist, only one violin selection
was given.
Each number on the progrant was
rendered with delicacy and tech
nique. The diction of the singers was
especially good. Much credit fori
the success of the recital is due to
the accompanists, Miss Aurora Potter
and Mr. Vincent Engledinger. The
success of tills program promises
much in the way of musical treats in
the future as a series of student
recitals is being planned to occur at
different times during tlie term.
The program was as follows:
