WOMEN LIVE MOKE
CHEAPLY THAN MEN
(Continued trom page 1)
At Hendricks hall and its annexes
$28 for four weeks, or an even $1
a day is charged, which includes
board, room and laundry of bed room
linens. Three years ago, before the
establishment of Hendricks hall,
Mary Spiller hall was in use and the
residents of this house paid $20
a month of four weeks. One hund
red and sixty girls are accommodated
at Hendricks hull.
Lives on $25 a Month
Instances of girls living in private
families or batching are not quite so
numerous as they were a few years
ago, since it has been found that
very little can be saved during the
present conditions. Notwithstanding
there are a few who prefer to live
alone and who are succeeding very
well with this arrangement. One
girl who earns her board and room
in a private home says that her ex
penses are about $225 a year, or
$25 a month. This includes cloth
ing, books and registration fees, and
is remarkably low considering the
present cost of living. In nearly
every other instance where students
are hoarding outside of the frater
nities or dormitories the expenses
run higher, since it is not the pur
pose of either of the former to make
anything above bare expenses.
Another girl, who keeps house for
her two smaller sisters and goes to
school also, estimates that her share
of the expenses in running their
little household is about $40 a month
including all of her expenses with
the exception of clothing. The same
girl, when a freshman living in the
dormitory lived for $200, which in
cluded e very thine except clothing.
laving at Home Expensive
One girl, living at home, after a
careful consideration of her expenses
came to the conclusion that she was
spending between $F>.rt and $00 on
an average during the year. How
ever, this included an increased out
lay for clothing this year which slu
purchased at the beginning of tin
school year. Her expenses, she be
lieves, will amount to $550 this year
This amount may seem large U
many, but when it is considered thal
the price of clothing has advancer
so greatly it can be seen that it is
not out of proportion nor exagger
ated.
During her freshman year in col
lege one girl and her sister bached
living in a tent, for which they pair:
no rent. They have estimated that
their expenses together amounted t(
about $18 or $20 a month. The
same year many other students bach
ed and figures prepared show tha
some lived on as small an amoun
as $0 a month for board. Other:
I spent as much as $12. The sam<
| girl mentioned now lives at one o:
the dormitories and spends $35 i
month without counting clothing.
Recreation and other pleasure:
’ have also increased and the average
has been hard to determine- Manj
girls, paying from $28 to $33 i
month for board and room, manage
very well on $40 a month, while
; others, whose board is less, are ir
'some instances living on $35. Ir
very few cases, although there arc
! some girls receiving more than -50
| a month for their general living ex
penses.
