livered a sermon dedicated to the Uni
: versity battalion, the ordnance corps,
' and the home guard company on Sunday
morning.
The great building was full, even to
the side rooms usually used only for
Sunday school purposes, and people of
every religious denomination united in
dedicating the morning to the military
corps which have come to be such a
great part of every day life.
Music a Feature.
Assembling at the corner of eleventh
and Willamette streets a few minutes
1 before time for the service the com
panies, 'headed by the University band,
the staff officers with the battalion and
national colors, preceeded to the church
in a body, where they were seated in
special reserved sections. The music
was a particular feature of the pro
gram. and included solos by Martha
Tinker and Curtiss Teterson. and special
i pipe-organ selections played by John
Stark Evans which were unusually im
pressive. “Onward Christian Soldiers”
and “America,” sung by the audience,
opened the sendees.
Doctor Parkinson chose for his
theme, “Nothing Counts But Sincerity
and Honor.” Speaking very briefly, and
stripping his thoughts of all super
fluous and meaningless words, he im
pressed upon the minds of his hearers

Miss Edith M. Hazlett, travelling sec
retary for tiie student volunteer move
ment. will be on the University campus
from Wednesday evening until Friday.
She will speak at the regular Y. W.
A. meeting which will be held at the
Bungalow at four o'clock on Thursday
instead of on Wednesday, in order that
every one may have an opportunity to
hear her.
Miss Haalett is a graduate of Occi
dental where she did important work
as a student lender in religious work
and student activities. She is sent out
from the student volunteer movement
headquarters in New York City.
The purpose of the student volunteer
movement is to place recruits in all of
the foreign countries of the world. The
work which it fosters is threefold: evan
gelical. medical and educational.
While on the campus Miss Hazlett
will be a guest of Hendricks Hall. On,
Wednesday evening at 7:.'!() she will
meet the student volunteers; Thursday
afternoon at four she will speak at the
Y. W. C. A. meeting, after which tea
will he served; and at six o’clock she
will have dinner at the Bungalow with
the new and the retiring cabinets of
the Y. W. C. A.

TO APPEAR ON CAMPUS

sent Irish Story Written
by Junior.
Unusual interest centers around the
production of “The Warning of Nora
Michael,” an Irish peasant piny written
by Tracy Byers which will be given
in the 2 o'clock dramatic class on
May 2.
The one act tradegy has four char
acters, Nora, the young girl of the play
who is taking the place of her father
as lighthouse keeper; Mrs. O’Neil, in
love with Nora, and a man named
Dennis.
Byers is coaching the play him
self and has chosen Delilah McDaniels,
Helen Brenton and Bthel Waite as
three of the characters. fourth
one is yet to be selecteu.
“The story is a tragedy with a sur
prise ending,” said Mr. Byers. “I have
written three other plays but have al
lowed no one to read them as yet.
‘‘The Warning of Nora Michael” he
has sent to the Wanington Square Play
ers. The story is of old Ireland; the
Ireland of one hundred years ago. The
scene of the play is laid on the Donegal
coast.
Mr. Reddie is assisting Mr. Byers in
putting on the play and is giving the
best lightings, properties and scenes
that the dramatic department has to
offer.
Tracy Byerg is a junior in the Uni
versity and this is the first of his plays
to bo produced.
WOLD VISITS OLD FRIENDS
Engineer, 1901 Graduate, Called from
New York by Mother's Death.
Irving Wold, graduate of 1901, was
in Eugene Saturday and spent some
time with Professor W. P. Boynton and
I Professor O, F. Stafford. Mr. Wold is
' now first assistant to the chief engineer
| of the Western Electric Company with
I offices in New York. The Western
Electric is the largest manufacturer of
i telephone apparatus in the world, and
is at present busy doing research work
for the government in connection with
signalling and electrical appliances.
Mr. Wold was for a time assigned
in physics at the University, then went
to Cornell, to Washington D. C. where
he married, and then to Pekin, China,
where he was instructor in physics in
the University there. He returned to
this country and took his doctor’s de
gree at Cornell.
Mr. Wold came to Portland because

the Arras and Peronne salients at. the
beginning of the German attack. This
territory now held by the Germans is on
low ground whip the strong positions
on ridges at the border of the German '
salients are still held by the British.
The colonel believes that the allies
could effect a great victory at any time
now but says that they are waiting for
a further waste of the German forces
and an opportunity to close in on the two
salients at once, when Arras becomes as
great as the Peronne salient, so that the
victory may he a really decisive one for
the allies.
Although somewhat disappointed in the
fact that the German attack is now prac
tically at a standstill, the colonel is well
satisfied with the allied positions. In
outlining their advantages at the pres
ent time he said:

“The Germans have not at all accom
plished the objects of their first drive.
The British still hold Messines, Vi my
and Passehendaele, points the Germans
wished to capture with the first rush so
that they could use them to pivot on to
swing to the left and separate the Brit

accomplished this they could have at
tacked our units and destroyed in detail.
But the British hold every one of these j
‘‘The allies can begin a counter attack j
with an array three times the size of the
one that has been so far opposing the
German offensive, a fact not generally
realized here. So far the strategical re
serve of the nllies lias not been used at
all. When these men are thrown into the
attack it will mean an increase of a half
million men.
German Losses Already Weaken.
“The Germans are already so weak
ened by the losses suffered in their at
tacks during the last drive that I do
not believe that they can hold their lines
where they are at present. Next fall I
look for them to have fallen back to po
sitions 3f5 or 40 miles back of the Mouse.
"Meanwhile we may look for an allied
counter attack soon at either Albers, a
strong Tidge position held by the British
between the Arras and Feronne salients
or at Lnon. Either one or both of these
attacks may he mndc and will be aimed
at cutting off the German lines of trans
portation—closing the hag. Then all we
will have to do for a while will he wait
for ‘Fritz’ to say when he will surrender.
DR. CLARK FINDS WORK

Dr. R. C. Clark of the history de
partment, who i* in Washington, D. C.,
doing war work in research, is working
in his office from nine until six, accord
ing to word received by President P. L.
Campbell a day or so ago. Those are
considerably longer hours than his in
structing on the campus required, and
Mr. Clark says he finds himself in the
necessity of working just as long as
the other men in the office.

University Girls Get Chance

for real war service in France, and at
once! Don’t wait to make the trip, hilt
send yourself by proxy, Thursday of this
week.’’ This is the message given by
Miss Mozelle Hair, of the extension divi
sion.
“The proposition is this,” said Miss
Ilair. "Dr. Bertha S. Bfuurt, who was
for several years director of physical
education for women in the University,
is now in the service of the American
Red Cross in France, where she is or
ganizing a dispensary for the care of wo
men and children, at Blois. In a letter
dated March 2, 1918, Dr. Stuart wrote
I to her friends in Eugene, ‘You ssked me
to tell you what the nped was. I want
money to buy milk and eggs for these
poor undernourished children, who look
as if they had already lived a century,
and children’s clothe* for all aces, and
toys, too. They have nothing, and are
heart-breaking.’ ”
Money is being collected now to send
to Dr. Stuart. Contributions may be left
with Professor E. E. De Cou, at ilia
office in the administration building, or
with Miss Hair, at the extension division
office, before Friday of this week. Don’t
hesitate because yon haven’t much to
contribute, for the need is great and
urgent, and every bit will help.
Mrs. 1\ D. Campbell and Mrs. De Cou
are arranging to make clothing to send
as soon as an order can be secured from
the Red Cross in compliance with the
government’s latest parcel post order. If
any University women can assist in the
| making of this clothing, they should leave
their names with Mrs. Campbell at once.
