Lottery dances are lo>ts of fun as n menus for promoting democracy amow classmates, and should be encouraged, but ns a conditioning process for a football team, they aTe distinctly out of place. The. seniors learned this fact SaT^kday afternoon, when after spend ing the greater part of the preceding night and early morning in terpslchorean pleasures, they met the sophomores for the class championship, and lost by a score of (J—0. The sophomores with fire in their eyes, and a superabundance of fight, pushed the sluggish upperclassmen ar ound the field pretty nearly as they liked. The lone score came in the first five minutes of play, following a march straight down the field, from the sopho mores’ 35-yard line. Line bucks were nil the sophomores needed, and not once did ithey fail to mnke yardage. Boylen nnd Mulkey alternated at carrying the ball, Uoylnn making the touchdown. The ■tiry at goal went wide. The senior line obligingly made way wherever the sec ond-year men desired, during their wild rampage to the goal line. Grebe Starts Lone Drive f'aptnin Walter Grebe, of the senior, chose to receive the kick-off and start an offensive of his own. The offensive started, but thnt was about all, and after three downs, in w'hioh they gained five yards, Warner punted 45 yards to Mul key. Again the sophomores started a relentless mttfcck, but the whistle blew before they grew dangerous. The seniors hold a council of war Don’t forget Bob’s Barber Shop—just around the corner, on 7th. After receiv ing the kick-off, the sophomores un corked a couple of forward passe* and had the ball on the senior 15-yard line. Here the sombrero-wearers showed a flash of class, held for four downs and obtained the ball. Grebe at once started an aerial attack, and three successive passes brought the ball to the center of the field. The spurt was too good to last, how ever, and Mulkey intercepted a wild throw, and nearly got away for a touch down. Montague tackled him on the senior 35-yard line. Passes Miss Their Mark Again the sophomores pounded the weary senior line, but their gains be came shorter, and finally the fourth-year men got the ball. A punting duel fol lowed, and with two minutes to play, the seniors had the ball on the sophomer 30-yard line. Pitying desperately against time, Grebe and Hob Earl threw pass after pass in a vain attempt to find an end who was free, but the four were used up without one being success ful. The game ended with the ball in the sophomores’ possession, on their own 35-yard line. For the seniors, Warner, Witty and Matson did most of the work. Sheehy was sorely missed, at quarter. Boylen, Runquist, Mulkey and Rain starred for the underclassmen. EXAMINATION SCHEDULE GIVEN OUT BY COMMITTEE Starting Wednesday Morning Quizzes Will Be Held Straight Through Until Friday Evening. The long-wuited-for rifles for the Uni versity battalion may arrive in the next two weeks. Upon returning to the cam pus this week after a hurried trip to Portland, Colonel Ilowen states that he ! has made partial arrangements with the state to secure rifles and bayonets. "The adjutant-general of Oregon has promised to lend us rifles and bayonets, provided there is no objection on the part of the war department,” stated Col onel Bowen yesterday. In order to have the rifles here at the earliest possible date. President Camp bell has already made a formal applica tion to the adjutant-general for rifles and bayonets, and he has promised to forward the application to the the war department at once. If it meets with favorable action by the war department, the rifles and bayonets should arrive on the campus before the first of the year. Send the Emerald Home I PROSPECTS BRIGHT FOB FRESHMAN FIVE Fifteen Men Have Scrimmage Under Direction of Dean Walker; Nearly All Experienced. Fifteen enthusiastic first year men turned out in the gymnasium yesterday afternoon in response to Coach Walker's call for candidates for the freshman basketball teams. The main practice was a scrimmage between two squads picked by the coach. Prospects for a good aggregation are fair this year due to the number of ex perienced men in the class of 1921. Al most every man who reported to the coach yesterday has had more or less ex perience in interscholastic competition, so together with the coaching of Walker a good team may be developed, say the fans. From all appearances the team will be light this year, us a number of the men wiegh in the neighborhood of 130 to 1-10 pounds, a very light average for a col lege team. However, the lack of avoir dupois is expected to be more than made up by the speed and fight of the men Several Are Candidates. In the first practice, [Starr, Jacoober ger, Durnow, Houston and Fdake ap peared as the most likely candidates for the regulars. However, says Walker, nothing can be predicted at this stage of the game and the team will probably not be picked until after Christmas. Whether the freshmen team will be al lowed to play in the inter-class series has not been decided. If carried on as the other activities, the regular men will be disqualified, but as the case has been different, in former years in this sport they may be regarded as eligible. Matter Awaits Hayward. Pill Hayward, director of basketball, is away on a hunting trip so this mat ter will be put off until he returns. The inter-class games are to be play ed immediately following the doughnut series beginning the first of the year. t, | Imperial Hotel S At Broadway, Stark and Washington f Should be designated as our favorite meeting place and j: Our Official Headquarters f [I In Portland, Oregon. 2 dining rooms ^ with table d’hote meals from 25c up DUNN’S BAKERY — For — GOOD THINGS TO EAT.
