Four times in the history of the school, elevens representing the schools have battled each other, with the result that each school has two victories to its credit. The game today will decide which team may claim the honors of the gridiron. In 1899, Oregon warriors gave battle to the California “bears.” at Berkeley, and when the smoke had ris.n, Cali fornia was on the long end of a 12 to 0 score. First Game California Victory The game in 1899 was the first meet ing of the two universities. In that year the Oregon aggregation was defeated at ; Berkeley, by the heavy Californians, by a score of 12 to 0. Oregon was handi capped from the start, by a wet field, which made fast plays impossible. A mistaken signal gave Oregon its first victory over California, just 17 years ago today. And incidentally, this ! same victory of Oregon, was the first victory ever made against California on her own gridiron. The game was won in the first half. Oregon punted to California’s 10-yard line. California’s fullback misunderstood the signal, given by the quarterback, who signalled for a return punt. Payne, the yellow-lemon fullback, punted fifteen times for a twenty-nine yard average. Other stars for Oregon were Captain Zeigler, Jakvvny, Scott and Smith. The two teams again met on October 23. 1004, for their third mix. The game which was played at Berkeley, resulted in a 12 to 0 victory for the southerners. Again Oregon was outweighed, and only sheer weight won the game for Cali fornia. The Oregon team was light and fast, and especially efficient on the de fense, succeeding in holding down Cali fornia's offensive. UNIVERSITY MAY GET • LARGER APPROPRIATION Figures Show State Valuation, Upon Which Money Is Granted, Has Gone Up. Figures prepared by the Oregon State Tax Commission, show that the assessed valuation of the state has increased $40,882,004, over the last year. The University of Oregon has a fixed allowance of $.003 (three tenths of a mill) on every dollar of assessed valua tion in the state. This will give the Uni', -rsity an additional $14,064, for operating expenses next year. The total assessed valuation of the counties of Oregon, as eognpiled by the county assessors, is $807,017,171. Last | year a similar assessed valuatiin was $761,035,127. This year's figures do not represent the entire assessed valuation of the state, ns the assessment of public-service corporations and other properties, assessed by the Tax Com mission. Universities authorized as yet have not been notified by the State Tax Com mission that the assessed valuation of the state has increased, and that the University has been givn credit for any money*. Karl Onthank, secretary to the president, says th" sum is small, but that it will help. “As nothing is definite, don’t be too optomistic, regarding this increase,” said Mr. Onthank.
