Charles William Wallace, authority <>n
the life and works of Shakespeare, will
speak on “Recent Shakespearian Ar
chives” during assembly hour Wednes
day, illustrating his talk with slides. Mr.
Wallace has just returned from Europe,
where he has made an extensive study
i I more than five million original rec
mds dealing with the life of Shakespeare.
He has been engaged in this work con- :
tinuously during the last seven years.
Mr. Wallace's investigations have
thrown a new light on the discussion re
garding the disputed authorship of
Shakespeare’s works. Adherents of
Francis I .aeon contend that William
Shakespeare, poorly educated as he was,

crook,” had a far-reaching repuation for

Wallace received the B. S. degree from
the Western Normal College in Shenan
doah, Iowa, in 1885; A. 15. from the Uni
versity of Nebraska in 1898; and 1’h. I).
from the University of Frieburg in 1906.
lie is a member of the faculty of the Uni
versity of Nebraska at present on leave
of absence, lie was offered the Ameri
can vice-consulship tit Mannheim in
1904, but refused it in order to con
tinue his special study at Freiburg.
Since 1010 Mr. Wallace has been engaged
in special research for the University
of Nebraska in Shakespeare and Tudor
Sluart drama in Europe. He lias written
various books and articles on Shakes
peare and'his work. Hr. Wallace is on his
way to Seattle from the University of
California, this being his only stop on the
way north.
Editor of Spectator Wants
Stories, Poems, Sketches.
Awards Will Total $82.50; Any
Oregon Student Eligible
in Contest.
Tincrh Ilmio, editor of the Spectator, a
Portland weekly, is offering prizes to
the amount of $S2.50 for the best poems,
short stories or sketches contributed by
Oregon I'niversit.v or college students.
The winning stories, poems and sketches
will be published March 17 in the tenth
anniversary number of the Spectator.
Thirty dollars will be awarded for the
best original short story not exceeding
3000 words. Fifteen dollars will be
awarded as a second prize, and $7.50 as
a third.
For the best poem, no limit as to
length, prizes of $10 and $5 are offered.
The best pen and ink or crayon
sketch, original subject, will be award >d
$10, while the second best will receive
$5.
All contributions should he sent to the i

Week-End at Cottage Grove.
Purpose to Interest High School
Students in Higher
Education.
A group of the University boys belong
ing to the Y. M. C. A. went to Cottage
Grove for the week-end ns the guests of
the town. Friday afternoon they held
an assembly in the high sehool and gave
talks and sang college and popular songs,
entertaining the students for over an
hour. The purpose of the trip was to
interest th° high sehool students in high
er education. The speakers were Mar
tin Nelson and Randall Scott.
A high school team and the University
crowd played a game of basketball Fri
day night. Saturday was spent in per
sonal interviews and hikes around the
town. Saturday evening at six o’clock all
the high sehool boys were invited to a
bean feed at which the University men
were the guests. After the bean feed
eholas .Taureguy gave an illustrated
lecture at the Methodise church to which
the public were invited. Over a hundred
slides were used. They were pictuies
of campus life, rallies, views of the build
ings, and ether college activities.
Sunday afternoon a religious meeting
was held at the Christian church at which
about 40 high school boys attended.
Seven addresses were given.
