THE ALUMNI PUBLICATION Owing to the higher cost of publication of the Emerald a renewal of the contract with the student management on the old basis has been found impossible. An arrangement has been en tered into with the Emerald subject to the appro val of the Alumni Council by which members in good standing are to receive the paper, one each week with an occasional special issue in addition. (Signed) HEN H. WILLIAMS. THE ALUMNI COUNCIL. The most important effect of the amendments adopted at the general alumni meeting last June was the crea tion of an Alumni Council which will take over the detailed administration of the association. Nine members are to be elected at large, the balloting to be done through the mail. The presi dent, vice-president and secretary, who nre entrusted with the arrangements for the election, have secured the nomina tion of eighteen members, the names of which appear on the ballot which is printed on this page. The ballots are to be filled out and mailed to the secretary, Ben H. Williams, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon. The ballots should be received before October 1, as the polls close on that date. ! PIXIE ME PREXY ! — Freshman Class Elects Leader for Coming Year. Acquaintance Party Announced for Saturday Evening, September 23. President of the freshman class this year is Everett I’ixley of Eugene, who | was elected by the “Frosh” over Morris Bocock at their meeting Monday after noon. Two tickets were in the field each nominated by committees selected for that purpose at the freshman meeting last week. The tickets were freely split however, the officers selected being Mendel Porringer, . Pendleton, vicc ■ president; Dorothy Parsons, Eugene, secretary; Clifford Sevits, Klamath Falls, treasurer. Considerable enthusiasm was shown by the one hundred and seventy “Frosh” in attendance over the remarks of Mrs. Parsons who declared, "I want to see the freshmen come out on top this year. The sophomores have most in variably won over the newer class. There is no cause for this. This year the freshman class has in every way an equal i chance with the sophomores for all hon i ors. In his speech of acceptance, President Pixlev made a plea to his classmates for a work-to-gether spirit, good sportsman ship and if necessary to show themselves not to be poor losers. No compulsory drill for underclass men, at present!, at least. When Uncle Slam decided that Ameri can soldiers, officers, and guns were needed on the Mexican border, he also decided that the University of Oregon should go without military drill for an indifinite time. So, in spite of the fact that the board |Of regents of the uni versity voted oil June 2 to introduce compulsory military drill this year for underclassmen, there will be no such drill. The war department cannot spare cither an officer or equipment. On September 12, Adjutant-General McCain, located at Washington, D.
