CONVICT “NO. 27,440”
END3 COURSE WITH U.
Hu Oomplrted Geology Extension Study;
Writn Dr. W. 0. Smith Letter
About Hie Life.
Convict 27,440 at the California etate
prieon at San Quentin, Is one of the peo
ple who has beon helped by the Univer
sity extension department, according to
lettera recently received from him by
Dr, W. D. Smith,
The man took a course In geology and
his returned lessons were frequently ac
companied by Interesting letters to his In
structor, The last came a few day* ago
when the course ended,
"No, 27,440” was a prospector before
being placed in confinement. The prison
authorities allowed him the chance of
working on the state highways with the
honor squad, and during the time he was
engaged in this he did most of his study
ing, often under difficulties.
"My lessons are not sent regularly,”
he said one time, "but out here on the
highway we find plenty of work and after
supper the only place to study is our
tent where there are fourteen men
sleeping, so a fellow has not got much
place to study. However, I intend to
do my best.” In another letter he says,
“I am somewhat tired in the evenings
and my hands are getting horny, but I am
in possession of perseverance, and as
you are kind enough to instruct me, I
shall continue.”
The final letter received from the con
vict reads as follows:
“In time to come I would very much
like to prospect in Mexico and South
America, principally for precious stones.
As I stand alone in this world as far as
relatives go, I have nothing to hinder
me only lack of liberty, which in course
of time will come my way.
“By submitting the enclosed report of
my work in the field of geology, my la
bors are concluded, insofar as the ques
tions on the instruction sheet sent to
me from the University of Oregon.
“I will therefore thank you, doctor,
for favors extended to me for something
which has been beneficial to me and has
given me the opportunity to use up idle
hours, which otherwise would necessarily
be more of a torment to me than mo
ments of pleasure.”
COLORED BOYS WILL SING
Quintette Entertains in Villard Tuesday.

Through the advance agent, W. H.
Walcott, a quintet of colored singers
from the Tuskegee Normal Institute are
slated to appear in a couple of hours of
old negro melodies, plantation songs
and dialect readings in Villard hall,
Tuesday at 4 o’clock.
The men are students in the Tuskegee
industrial school, Alabama. This school
industrial school, Alabama. This school
in 1881 and is attended entirely by col
ored people. The singers are on their
annual tour of the western states, but
have never been this far north before.
From here they will go to Corvallis.
There will be no admission either
time, but a silver offering will be taken.
TUBBING STOPPED AT STANFORD
The Stanford Student Council has put
the ban on tubbing, either as hazing or a
diciplinary measure. This decision was
brought about by the case of a freshman
who was tubbed for refusing to answer
a telephone call in accordance with the
hall rules. He applied to the judge for
warrants but agreed to let the matter be
settled by University authorities.
