LOVERS’ LANE
The graceful interwiniug c*f the trees
above the race, ,
The gay fantastic shadows mirrored soft
ly in its face,
The idly drifting boat that held her and
me
Bring back the dainty picture of the
sweetest memory.
And as I sit here smoking, dreaming,
that good old timb,
I’d like another boatride, with an “old
sweetheart of mine.”
—2—
IIow she held herself so quietly, caught by
the rapture of the place,
And how I sat there gazing at her half
averted face—•
That she oft turned toward me, a beauty
that did flash
That made me break the silence of our
drifting with a splash
Of the oars upon the water, as with a
thrill divine,
I looked into the blue eyes of that “old
sweetheart of mine.”
—3—
How her hand trailed in the water and
I longed to hold it tight
Yearning for the future when just mine
would be the right.
Then we would drift forever down Life’s
Lovers’ Lane
Where love would be our pilot, warding
sorrow if it came,
That sad hot tears should never dim those
blue eyes soft and fine,
For you see I love most-nobly that “old
Sweetheart of mine,”
—4—
My pipe is out, the spell is broken, comes
a letter to the door
Wondrous strange, it is her writing, al
though three years or more
We’ve lost track of each other; plough
I’ve always meant to ask—
Why ‘tis her wedding invitation, she was
married two days pust!
So there’s one lass I’ll never trouble with
that question old ns time,
’Tis the last boatride I’ve drifted with
that “old sweetheart of mine.”
