SMOKER ' ENDS IN SERENADING EXPEDITION EVENING ONE OF FEATURES Invading Desperado Ejected ’ From Bar-Room. Wrestling Bouts, and Jui Jitsu Show Strength of Class of 1917. (By Edison Mauhall) “Goodnight, ladies, we’re gonna leave you now!” Thus sang the Freshmen in front of the Chi Omega house at 12:00 p. m. Saturday night, closing an evening of goodfellowship, that began at the Kappa Sigma house at the Freshman Smoker and ended in a serenading party. Nearly every Freshman in the col lege was present at 8:00 o’clock sharp. Small cob pipes were passed around at once, and large bowls of to bacco with which to fill them. Coats and vests went out of commission early in the evening. Then when everyone was comfortable, with their cob pipes going, the air turning blue with smoke, and their arms lame from hearty hand-shaking, the pro gram commenced. Dancers Contest. Every fraternity house, the Dorm club, and the mon-fraternity men were asked to choose two men tor a ragging’ stunt. Then each two men were allowed to exhibit their skill at the tango, and similar dances dedi cated -to the Turkey, rabbit and bear. Ernest Watkins and ,Robert Swain, of the Dorm club, were judged to have the most artistic dance. Then each house chose another team to put on a boxing or wrestling match. A fierce mill between George Colton and Frank Beach of the Sigma Nu was the most bloody, and conse quently the most popular. Both men showed real championship skill. The match was called a draw. Riggs and Sweet of the Aliiha Tau Omega pulled off a no-rules boxing and wrestling match, clad in long raincoats like two “Jack-the-grab bers.” This match was far from bloody. Pobst played low, sad music during most of the bout. Boxing Bouts Entertain. Other bouts were between Martin and McCarthy of the.Avava house; Walker and Glatt, Delta Tau Delta; Breeding and Bynon, Sigma Chi; Huston and Elton, Dorm Club; Fitz maurice and Rathburn, Phi Gamma Delta; and Schaefer and Seche, Phi Delta Theta. Martin Nelson, Freshman class president, made a speech In which he expressed the class’ gratitude to the*r hosts for the smoker. He spoke of the spirit of democracy that prevaded the gathering, and “how fair the weather is when good fellows get to gether.’’ Two Japanese Freshmen Ogaswaia and Fujimachi showed a little jiu jutsu. They threw each other over their heads and across the mat, ap uarentiy with no effort, and then showed Bob Swain, by merely twist ing his leg, how helpless he was in the hands of an 115 pound Japanese. The bar was thrown open, behind which Clark and Elliott served soft driinks and being good, Ibar-keeps, served hot dogs, pretzels, and cheese with them. Selzer Cools Rioters. With a black mask over his face gun in his hand, some desperado at tempted to hold up the entire assem bly in the bar. One of the barkeeps, Clarke, pulied out a six-shooter and a terrific battle occurred, in which Clark was able to drive out the hold up man and restore order. Then the crowd got tumultous. They were just at the point of climb ing over the bar and hanging Elliott, tlie other barkeep. when he aimed a selzer bottle their way and cooled the fighting spirit of the disturbers by spraying them with selzer water. After this, the men gathered in a circle, and each house chose a man to entertain the assembly with a poem or oration. Fitzmaurice’s stunt got the biggest hand. After they had left the Kappa lignin house, tlie entire party went on a serenading expedition in which every sorority house was visited. rANK OPENING IS POSTPONED PILE LAYING DECIDED ON BY REGENTS TAKES MORE TIME DATE MOW AFTER VACATION Women’s Entrance Being Made and Dressing Room Will Be Provided for Co-ed Mer maids Who Will Use Plunge. Once more the opening of the swimming pool has been postponed to a later date, this time until after the Christmas vacation. “Anyway we :an regard our first swim, as in the nature of a Christmas present from the state,” is the way in which the optimistic students look at the an nounced delay. The pool proper is all finished and ready for the water to be turned in, hut the board of Regents has decided to lay a tile floor over the floor of the entire room, thus causing the delay. At first, it was decided to do this extra work during the Christmas vacation, but due to the fact the work will take a longer time than the vacation will allow, those in charge have decided to commence, as soon as the mater ial arrives, so it will be impossible for the students to use the tank, while the work is in progress. In the event hat the tank will be filled for the irst time on Saturday and Sunday, he men will thus be excluded from >eing the first to take a plunge. The cost of the tile floor will be [bout $500. In addition to the lay ng of the tile there still remains sev eral other jobs; the repainting of the entire room, writh a coat of white mint; the cutting of a door in the vest wall so as to permit the women using the pool without interffi with the rest of the gymnasium, and the making of a dressing room in west end of the room, inis ro * will be set off by a curtain, stretch'd on rods.
