To the Editor: I want to beg space in your paper for an appeal to the public on a mat ter of much more importance than many as yet think. It is the matter of early holiday shopping. There are very few who have not heard this appeal from many sources before, but many, very many, have not been moved by it as they should. As Labor Commissioner, charged with the protection as far as possible of the workers of Oregon, I add my voice to the appeal to everyone to shop early. Do your shopping early in the month, early in the week, early in the day. Observe all three of these important points and you will do jus tice and mercy that will be appreci ated by thousands of overworked saleswomen and salesmen, and by diousands more who realize the im portance of such action. * Shop early and in broad daylight. Don’t allow yourself to linger with ;he thoughtless throng after the ivening shadows begin to fall. Do Lis and the fervent “God bless you’’ vill spring from the hearts of tens )f thousands of shop girls ready to mllapse from the fatigue of the day )f the hardest kind of work. Have you any idea of the work of 30th brain and body of the average saleswoman, particularly in the city )r larger town? 1 dare say you have lot—not one in fifty of you. On ;heir feet all day, running hither and ;hither, harassed by the whim and iften by the rebuke of all classes of nen and women in ail stages of ner rous tension. A more fatiguing oc :upation is unknown. Think of it, please, and lend your reasonable as sistance by forming habits that will idd just as little as possible to the general strain. It is at these rush seasons when die incentive is greatest to break the law governing hours of employment, ^.nd this is natural. Merchants' drive to please their patrons and to iccommodate the public in every way. Surely the public, also, has some re sponsibility. If the law is violated, hose charged with its enforcement nust act or be justly censured. From every conceivable viewpoint he appeal for early shopping is of yital merit, and I urge upon one and ill the importance of co-operation loth in their personal acts, and in iielping by verbal appeal, to secure die most general observance of so worthy a principle. Mrs. Fletclier pointed out on the map the stations of the Oregon mis sionaries who are working in foreign countries. The cost of Harvard’s football team this year amounted to $35,000.
