BIG BOBBIE MEETING HELD BY Y. HI. C. IE _ Fred B. Smith and Raymond Robins1 Alternate in Speaking to Audiences. Approximately three hundred and fifty men and women, most of whom were townspeople, heard Fred B. Smith and Raymond Robins, the great Y. M. C. A. speakers, in four half hour addresses in Villard Hall and in the Women’s Gymnasium last even ing, after the basketball game. Each speaker spoke at both places, alter nating with the International Quar tette. President P. L. Campbell pre sided at the men’s meeting in Villard, while Mrs. Fletcher was in the chair at the gathering of the women. There were no announced subjects; the shoit time available,—both speak ers leaving on the 9:30 train for San Francisco, from where they sail Fri day for the Orient—made it neces sary for brief personal talks to the audiences. Fred B. Smith, the “great speaker to men,” who first appeared in Vil lard Hall eleven years ago, and has since been seen on the campus five or six times, declared that at one time his one ambition was to be a “cham pion billiard player,” but was saved from that fate by having been arrest ed by the spirit of Christ.” The object of the Men and Religion Forward Movement, the speaker said, was to swell the ranks of Christian men, which he declared were three million short. The ability to get money is not to be despised, but “mere money getting is vulgar, absolutely vulgar,” contin ued Mr. Smith, who declared that “Not a man in this room is safe for five years without religion.” In conclusion, Mr. Smith, who is still the same magnetic speaker, said, “Get money, get position, get all that is worthy of a man, but don’t be afraid to let religion sway you in your life.” Raymond Robins, the Social Service Leader in the Men and Religion For ward Movement, spoke first to the men. In a forceful manner, he point ed out that our social conscience must be developed among all, before our twentieth century problems can be faced and solved. He declared that the solution of our problems will not come about by the creation of “bitter, antagonistic groups, and warring classes.” But Mr. Robins affirmed; that “We will never get through with-j out religion.” The call for leadership he said, would not be answered by cold blooded, cold storage religion, but from a mastery of the facts of the Bible. In conclusion the speaker remarked, “It is by the wine poured out. not drunk; not by what you receive, but by what you give out, that the great story of your life will be told.” PROF. DURR LECTURES UPOR “PALLJIS ATKEHA” Popular Subject in Artistic World Depicted in Illustrated. Lecture. Pallas Athena, the most popular of the duties among sculptors and paint ers. was the subject of Professor Dunn’s illustrated lecture last Tues day afternoon. Many views were shown, representing Athena in all her attributes ranging from the dignified “Ladies’ Home Journal” Minerva to the almost masculine diety of righte ous warfare. Not only has Athena been defined as the protectress of liberal ants, government, mentality and just warfare, but there has even been an attempt to identify the fa mous Aphrodite of Melos with her. However, a comparison of statues brings out the impossibility of such a theory. The “Parthenos” of Pheidias was the most elaborate, and possibly celebrated, although his “Lemnian Athena” may have been as popular in its time. The next lecture on Tuesday after noon at 4 o’clock will be upon a sub ject rather of medivial history, St. Lawrence and Lebastion,” a very common source of material for Italian medieval scuptors and painters.
