    H. II. FISHER CREATES
Immense Flower Is a Hybrid, Says
Gardener—May be Named for
Mrs. E. II. I’iper.
The University’s campus policeman,
gardener, and general superintendent
of public improvement, Mr. H. M.
Fisher, has not only distinguished
himself as an executor of nature’s
laws, but has also made himself
known as a man of exceptional origin
ality and industry, the reason being
that he has produced a wonderful new
variety of chrysanthemum.
The garden spot is the flower bed
back of the Dormitory on which that
appealing little sign, “Touch not,
fondle not, PLUCK not,” is placed.
The stalk of the flower is nine feet
high and the diameter of the blossom
is nine inches. The flower is of a sort
of pink shading down to a purple cen
ter, and is pronounced by all who have
seen it, as an unusually beautiful
specimen.
The flower is without name, says
Mr. Fisher, as it is a cross or hybrid
of two different specimens. When
asked, how and by what means did he
grow such a wonderful flower, Mr.
Luther Burbank-Fisher denied any
honors in the attainment at all, and
says that it is all due to the wonder
ful soil in which the flower was plant
ed. As to a name, Mr. Fisher says, it
•will likely be named after the wife of
the assembly speaker Wednesday, Mrs.
E. B. Piper.

“The old type of journalism was hap
hazard, but newspaper work has now
become hiphly systematized; our pio

He eulogized Henry M. Stanley as
the preatost reporter in the history
of America, and pave a brief outline
of his life. Other preat newspaper
men, as Horace Greeley, William Sew

nnd James Bennett, and their rise to
prominence in this work were spoken
of Mr. Piper.
Mr. Piper’s requirements for a pood
reporter were, character, enerpy, in
dustry, honesty, perseverance, and a
keen interest in public affairs. He
said: “The newpaper deals with lift'-,
the reporter is the eye and ear of the
newspaper, and therefore the report

with what is going on around him.
Personality the ability to meet peo

to the highest success.
On the getting of the news, Mr.
Piper laid the greatest importance in
reportorial work, and In this he pave
the five “WV’ Who. What, When,
Where, Why, as the essentials for a
complete, full, satisfactory news item.
He said no better example (if a high
standard of reporting could he found,
than the miracle of the blind man, to
he found in the ninth ' pier of the
Book of John, in the Bible.
