Whitman Puts W. S. C. Back
Another Notch.
“Ye Gods of War! What has Do
lan wrought?” Thus exclaimed the
sporting sheets of the Northwest.when
they heard of the terrific battle which
the Oregon Aggies waged against
Gilmour Dobie’s University of Wash
ington eleven on the Multnomah grid
iron last Saturday. Entering the con
test with betting odds three to one
against them, the (). A. C. eleven took
the aggressive and literally swamped
their northern opponents in the mud
covered field.
Washington was the first to score,
with a drop kick by quarterback Young
after the ball had been placed upon
the Aggie 16-yard line by a series of
lucky runs. From that time until the
final touchdown by Washington, the
odds were always in favor of Dolan’s
eleven.
Blackwell Ties Score.
In the second quarter, by spectacu
lar work, the O. A. C. backs succeed
ed in keeping the ball almost contin
uously in their opponents’ territory,
which enabled Blackwell to try for
several place kicks, and finally suc
ceeding in putting one between the
goal posts and tying the score. All
during the second half the ball zig
zagged back and forth, with (). A. C.
making ten yards to their opponents’
eight, until three minutes before the
final whistle blew, when Washington,
after a 20-yard gain on a forward
pass and a succession of line bucks,
placed the ball over the goal line
and nosed out a lucky nine to three
victory.
Dobie Excited.
This was the first real scare that
has been thrown into the Dobie camp
for several years, and the wily Scot
was appreciably excited. All of Do
bio’s fancy dancing and clever con
tortionist stunts, including the famous
Highland Fling and the reverse hand
spring, were of no avail against the
spectacular team work displayed by
the Dolan eleven. The Washingto
nians won simply by chance.
Blackwell was the shining star for
the Aggies, but he was closely sec
onded by May at tackle, Christian at
center, and Evendon, the veteran full
back. For Washington, fullback
Jacquot and quarterback Young were
the stars.
Niles Is Again Whitman Star.
The elements were again disturbed
at Spokane when the shifty Whitman
College eleven exceeded the hopes of
its most ardent admirers and over
whelmed Benders’ Washington State
College eleven by the one-sided score
of BO to 0. The game was Whit
man’s throughout, and its goal was
never in serious danger.
“Tubby” Niles, Whitman’s All
Northwest fullback, was the star for
the Missionaries, while Keinholz and
Coulter played best for W. S. C.
