    ABE SAYS BIG RALLY
IF MILEAGE GABBIES
WEDNESDAY NIGHT IS TIME
FOR CELEBRATION
No Bonfire Planned, But Soap Box
Orators Will Spellbind—Free
Shows—M ay be.
Should the Millage Bill survive the
review by the Oregon electorate at
the polls today, tomorrow night will
be the occasion for another spontane
ous student rally. As was the, case
four years ago, when the University
was returned victor in the general
election, an effervescent display of
spirit will terminate the tension
which the University has been endur
ing for the last year.
In order to celebrate the passage
of the bill which is expected to mean
so much to the institution, Yell Leader
Abe Blackman has issued a call for
the varsity war dogs to assemble at
the Dormitory at the usual time Wed
nesday evening, and from there ad
journ to the business section of the
city for an informal good time.
There will be no bonfire, because of
lack of time for construction, nor will
there be any set speeches prepared
for the rally. Instead, some street
corner will be pre-empted for the
time being, and with the aid of a soap
box, the prominent members of the
assemblage will be singled out for in
spiring oratorical efforts suited to the
occasion.
After the completion of the down
town effort, Blackman will declare j
that all formalities are to be dis
pensed with, and that the boys should
enjoy themselves to the* utmost.
“The Chocolate Soldier.”
No light opera of recent years has
created such a delightful impression
upon the music-loving public as “The
Chocolate Soldier,” which will be the
attraction at thu Eugene Theatre,
Tuesday, November f>. The theme of
the opera has been taken from the
work of Bernard Shaw, “Arms and
the Man,” and the magic genius of
Oscar Straus created the rhythmetic,
tuneful music which is being whistled
and sung all over Europe as well as
America.
Throughout the Australian Empire
snatches of the aria and such songs
as “My Hero,” are sung by peasants
and noblemen alike. Boatmen along
the Blue Danube and the lesser pic
turesque streams, where the very
scenes of this charming Viennese
composition were inspired, are ever
humming airs from the opera.
Viennese in tone, “The Chocolate
Soldier,” finds its location in the ro
mantic Dragoman Pass of Bulgaria,
and F. C. Whitney has brought all
the quaint, costuming, embroideries
and martial glitter direct from that
region.
The company includes Rena Viv
ienne. the little singer, to whom all
New York and Chicago gave homage;
Lucille Saunders, formerly of the
Hof Theatres of Berlin and Dresden;
lion Bergere, as the coquettish
Mascha: John F. McDonough, a tenor
of unusual reputation; Charles Pur
cell as “The Chocolate Soldier," J.
Russell Powell and Syvan Langlois,
who played the butTo roles with the
New York and Chicago organizations,
the much-praised Singing Chorus and
Miss Edna McKnight, 'll, went to
Albany yesterday afternoon.
