IIow this offer will be accepted bj
the University, is not known, as th<
Aggies are waiting for the final dis
position of their Thursday’s resolu
tion before broaching this scheme.
Students Oppose Long Contract
In the meantime student sentiment
is crystalizing in opposition to the
long string attached to the first 0. A,
C. offer. President Carleton Spencer,
of the Student Body, said, that this
four year contract was out of the
question. Instead, he was in favor of
a compromise, whereby the game
would be played in Eugene this fall,
and in Portland for the next two
years. This, he thought, would be
satisfactory to the Aggies.
Professor H. B. Leonard, of the
Athletic Council, while not conversant
with the details of the offer, was
heartily opposed to games in Port
land, thinking that games in the me
tropolis tend to commercialise the
sport. He favored campus contests,
as they emphasized sport for sport’s
sake. Miss Elizabeth Busch, secretary
of the Student Body, thought that it
was too great a risk to run, as condi
tions would change even two or three
years hence. A final effort to get a
line on student sentiment was made
by phoning to most of the fraternity
and sorority houses. The opinion of
the upperclassmen was that, although
the offer to play the University in Eu
gene was a generous one, the long
contract phase of the proposition was
unadvisable.
deary’s Clause Opposed
Both Carleton Spencer and Regis
trar Tiffany were of tin; opinion that
Manager Geary’s clause, allowing
either team at the end of a two year
period, to demand a change of loca
tion, would serve to reopen the whole
question at that time. They expressed
the opinion that (). A. C. would be
willing to sign a contract for three
years. If the reported offer to be
made O. A, C. materializes, they were
of the opinion that it will probably
bu accepted.
manor may Me Mettled noon
As the Athletic Council will not
meet before Manager Geary returns
from Walla Walla, next week, tho
first offer will not be settled before
that time. If the Oregon Agricul
tural College transmits its second of
fer before the time of the Council’s
meeting, that may also be considered
by that body, and thus settle the mat
ter before the end of the next week.
The resolutions passed by the O.
A. C. Student Body last Thursday,
which have put a new aspect on the
game, are as follows:
“Resolved, That a game of football
between the teams representing the
Oregon University and the Oregon
Agricultural College be played at Eu
gene, Oregon, Saturday, November 211,
1912, on the following conditions:
“First -That a contract providing
for a series of five games be signed by
tho accredited representatives of the
two institutions, providing for the first
game at Eugene, and the second, third,
fourth and fifth games to be played
at Portland, Oregon, on the field of
tlu> Multnomah Amateur Athletic Club
on successive Thanksgiving days.
“Second That an equal division of
gate receipts be provided for the game
to be played at Eugene, and that a
triangular division, with the Multno
mah Amateur Athletic Club, as the
third party, be agreed upon for the
four games to be played at Portland,
incidental details to be arranged la
ter.
“Third That in all games provided
for in this contract, the respective
teams pay their team and individual
expenses, traveling and other inciden
tals, and that neither management be
responsible for indebtedness incurred
by the other.
“Fourth That the respective man
agers hereby agree to a forfeiture
clause in the football contract, pro
viding for a payment of $1,000 by the
party canceling this contract or any
game provided for therein.”
