AGTORINES COMPETE Dramatic Club to Make Diagnosis of the Histrionically Afflicted. Conditions governing the Dramatic Club tryout, October 24, were an nounced at the meeting of the organ ization last Thursday evening. In stead of following the custom of al lowing candidates to choose their own material for delivery, the tryout com mittee has selected passages from five standard plays,—two light comedies and three Shakespearean dramas—of which the candidate is required to de liver one extract from each group. The selections include the diologue be tween Mrs. Malaprop and Captain Ab solute, in act three, scene three, “The Rivals’’; the quarrel scene between Sir Peter and Lady Teazle, in act two, scene one, “The School for Scandal”; Portia’s plea for mercy, from “The Merchant of Venice”; the speech of Claudius in act three, scene three, of “Hamlet”; and the “Seven Ages,” sol iloquy of Jaques, in act two, scene seven, “As You Like It.” This year there are eight vacancies to be filled by competitive tryout. As the modified constitution of the club limits the number of active members to twenty, and provides for ten asso ciate members, the successful candi dates will be placed upon the associate list. The constitution provides that active members be given preferences in assembling casts for club produc tions, and they alone may have con trol of executive matters. Professor Reddie, of the Public Speaking Department, was re-elected coach for the coming season. JOURNALISTS ENTHUSE Professor Allen Entertains Visiting Newspaper Men, Who Promise to Aid Department.
