MAY SUTTON GIVES ADVICE
ON TENNIS PLAYING
In a recent number of American
Lawn Tennis there appeared an ar
ticle entitled “Woman’s Play and
How to Improve It,” by May Sutton
of Los Angeles, the former woman
champion of the United States and
England.
Miss Sutton says in part:
“If you really enjoy playing you
should with constant practice improve
your game and eventually become a
good player. In practice games al
ways try to win, of course, but above
all thing essay new strokes, with the
fixed idea of perfecting them. For
example, if your bacx hand is weak,
never get out of position in order to
make a stroke with your fore arm,
when the proper return is one with
your back hand. By doing so you get
out of position and you are thus at
the mercy of your opponent, espe
cially if the next return is a speedy
one.
“A girl just learning to play
should practice with some one not
much better than herself. If her op
ponent is much better her superior
ity will cause discouragement and
the new player will come to think
that she does not know anything
about the game. Some self-confi
dence is needed if one is to make real
progress.”
PIT WARRIORS FIGHT
SANGUINARY BATTLE
On Decoration Day, about ten
o’clock in the morning, the Avavas
staged one of the most successful in
terfraternity canine encounters that
has been pulled off at Oregon for
some time. The principals were
Mick, Sigma Nu, who by way turned
out to be the better warrior, and
Prokos, Beta Theta Pi.
The combat was started by the Sig
ma Nu hope, who assumed the ag
gressive by seizing Prok by a foreleg,
snaking him off the Avava veranda.
From this time on, both dogs
mixed it, with Mick showing up bet
ter in aggressiveness and infighting.
The rock-chewing propensities of the
latter animal, however, made it im
possible for him to secure any per
manent holds, and honors were even
as to actual damage inflicted. A de
cision on this score was impossible,
and Referee Van Marter gave the
fight to the Sigma Nu representative
on points.
Jesse Bond Writes Thesis.
Jesse H. Bond, ’09, who has taught
in the Condon school during the past
year, is writing a thesis on “The
Genesis of Jesus’ Doctrine of Father
hood,” for his master’s degree under
Prof. Young. The article has been
highly complimented by Schmidt, of
Cornell, and Giddings, of Columbia
University.
While in college, Jesse Bond dis
tinguished himself in both debate and
oratory—winning the interstate ora
torical contest in 1908, second place
in the state oratorical contest in 1909
and acting as leader on interstate de
bating teams for two years. He was
always known as a man who followed
tenaciously his carefully thought out
moral principles and because of this
trait, at times, stirred up strenuous
opposition among those who dis
agreed with him, however, no one
doubted that he was a man who had
the courage of his convictions.
