Abel Kiviat, the Irish American
Athletic Club runner, who defeated
Melvin Shepard last Saturday in a
1500-meter race, in the world’s record
time of 3:59 1-5, or four seconds
faster than McClure’s recent time,
began his athletic career in the pub
lic schools of New York.
In the third lap of the relay race
at Seattle last Saturday, Courtney
overcame a handicap of fifteen yards
in his race with Boylen, but the lat
ter, when reaching the last straight
away, nearly overhauled the Wash
ington man, who beat Boylen but two
feet.
Pete Gerhardt, the Olympic Club’s
standby in short dashes, who ran sec
ond to Courtney in the Olympic try
outs, is 37 years old, and has two
children.
By clever jockeying and team work,
Oregon’s trio in the two mile event
at Seattle, ran McClelland, the U. of
W. two miler off his feet, and fin
ished as they pleased.
During the O. A. C. senior picnic
at Newport, Dr. Stewart, athletic, in
structor of the Aggies, held a track
meet on the beach.
Windnagle again ran a half mile
in less than two minutes during the
inter-scholastic meet in Portland re
cently. His record of 1:56 4-5 is not
a world’s record for prep schools, a
former student at Mercerburgs Acad
emy having a record of 1:55 for the
distance.
Again a negro comes to the front
in the quarter mile. An Olympic
Club representative having won the
race in the recent Olympic tryouts.
Taylor, a former negro student at
the University of Pennsylvania, holds
the inter-collegiate record.
The pole vaulting record is being
vigorously assailed in the East by
Babcock, of Columbia, and Wright,
of Dartmouth. Both are vaulting
around the 12 feet 7 inches mark.
However, Bellah’s recent vault of 12
feet 9 7-8 inches, is the top notch so
far this year.
Neill is now ten feet eight inches
from the world’s javelin record, held
by Hunning of Sweden. His toss at
Seattle put him within a foot and a
half of Snedigar’s American record,
but as that was made on the Coast,
Neill gets credit for only a North
west record.
Eutaxians Elect.
The Eutaxian Literary Society
elected its officers for next year at
its meeting Tuesday evening. Lu
cille Davis was unanimously elected
president, Hilda Brant, treasurer,
Lyle Steiwer, editor, Nell Hemenway,
critic, Margaret Rankin, sargeant-at
arms, and Janet Young received the
majority of votes for the office of
secretary.
Miss Eleanor McLaine was elected
vice presinent.
The Sigma Nus had as their week
end guest Mr. Hopkins, of Gamma
Nu chapter.
Arthur Geary has been in Portland.
Miss Lila Sengstake returned Tues
day from Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Fenton, who have
been visiting their son Boyce at the
Beta house, returned to their home
in McMinnville.
