Ira Courtney, the University of
Washington sprinter, entered the
record breaking class last Saturday
at the Olympic tryouts, when he ne
gotiated the 110 meter race in 10 4-5
seconds, equaling the world’s record
held by Walker, the South African
sprinter.
Byron Houck, the ex-Varsity pitch
er. finished a game for the Athletics
Tuesday. Connie Mack worked him
after St. Louis had knocked two reg
ular twirlers out of the box.
The Pacific Coast is lamentably
weak in broad jumpers this year. Al
len, of California is the only consis
tent performer. His best mark in
the Olympic tryouts was only 22 ft.
6 in.
Stine and Irwin Brooks, two of the
Varsity tennis representatives in the
Tri-State Tournament, in Seattle,
practiced with the M. A. A. C. rec
quet wielders last Thursday before
starting for Seattle.
It took Melvin Sheppard, the fa
mous Irish Amereican Athletic Club
runner, six years to shove the rec
ord for the 1500 meter race down to
4:03 1-5. McClure came within 1-5
of a second of that time after three
years with the spikes.
Dopesters have figured it out that
Ty Cobb is the very best little swat
ter of the Varsity brigade. Mount
led the battting list for a while, but
something went wrong with his bet
ting eye.
“Father Tom” Kelly is at present
guiding the destinies of the Chehalis
ball team, in the Washington State
League.
Hayward accounts for Hawkins’ de
feat by the fact that Kelly landed in
a better running posture than did
Hawkins.
Pictures of the race show that
Smithson ran in rare form, clearing
the sticks by a bare fraction of an
inch, while Hawk was evidently ex
cited, as he was over the barriers
by half a foot.
Oregon Club Holds Election
The Oregon Club held its annual
election of officers Thursday even
ing in Dr. Schmidt’s room.
The officers elected for the ensu
ing year are: President, Russell Cal
kins; Vice President, Grace Hartley;
Secretary, Minnie Holman; Treasur
er, Raymond O. Williams; and Mem
ber at Large, Otto Heider.
Vern Apperson was elected mana
ger of baseball for the remainder of
the present year, and Freshman
Street was elected manager of track
for the remainder of the present year.
The club will probably give a “get
acquainted” social during the Summer
School for bashfuls and disinclines.
Y. W. Reports Given
The Y. W. C. A. Cabinet met Mon
day at 4:00 P. M. Reports from
each committee were heard. The con
ference, which is to be held this year
at Gearhart, was discussed and plans
are being made for a delegation of
at least fifteen. As yet Florence
Cleveland, Ermel Miller, Elizabeth
Busch and Lila Sengstake are the
only girls who are sure of attending.
Aaron Gould left Thursday for
Portland, on account of illness.
Miss Vieve Cecil is down from
Portland to visit the Gamma Delta
Gammas.
Miss Mae Sheehy, of Portland, is
visiting her sister Edith at the Gam
ma Phi house.
