TRUCK SEASON OPENED
WITH CLOSE CONTESTS
Six Conference Colleges Meet With
Oregon, W. S. C., and Whitman
as Victors.
Last Friday and Saturday marked
the real opening of the inter-colleg
iate track season in the Northwest.
All of the six conference colleges,
Washington, Idaho, W. S. C., Whit
man, 0. A. C., and Oregon, participat
ed in dual meets.
Oregon met and easily defeated the
O. A. C. track men on Friday. On
Saturday Washington State College
sprang a surprise on the sport follow
ers and vanquished the famous Uni
versity of Washington team by an
overwhelming score.
The only fast time made in the meet
was the 100 and 220, wTiich were eas
ily taken by the fleet-footed Courtney.
On the same day, May 11, Whitman
and Idaho University competed in one
of the closest contests ever held on a
Northwest track. Not until Blooin
quist redeemed what looked like a
sure loss in the relay, did Whitman
overcome the Gem Staters. One of
the exciting features of this meet was
the dead heat in the quarter mile be
tween Loux, of Idaho, and Bloomquist,
of Whitman.
The real contest of the season will
be the big conference meet in Port
land. June 1. The six conference col
leges will participate in this meet,
making it the largest contest ever
held in the Northwest.
Manager Geary was selected to ar
range the meet and is already making
extensive plans for a successful con
test.
WASHINGTON TO INAUGURATE
NEW FEATURE “PARENTS DAY”
Students at the University of
Washington will entertain their par
ents on the campus on Wednesday,
May 22. All members of the student
body have been asked to invite their
parents for that day, and a reception
has been provided.
The incomplete program of the day
includes the moving up assembly,
when athletic emblems are awarded
for the year, and the first inaugural
ceremonies for the new associated
student officers will be held. From 2
to 4, President and Mrs. Kane will
hold a reception for the visitors and
The Daily will conduct an open house
for the afternoon. A crew race will
be scheduled at 4 o’clock and addi
tional entertainment will be provided
later by the committee.
Y. M. C. A. RIVER
PICNIC PLANNED
The last regular Y. M. C. A. lec
ture of the year will be given by Dr.
Wm. Parsons on “Intellectual Con
sistency in Christianity,” Thursday,
May 16, from 7 to 7:50 P. M. He was
formerly a prominent worker among
students of Eastern universities, serv
ing in the capacity of student pastor
for several years. The quartette will
sing, preliminary to the address.
The annual picnic up the race and
across the Willamette will take place
Friday, May 17. The followers of
cut-door pastime will leave the Dor
mitory at 4:15 P. M., and maneuver
up the race in canoes.
Dr. Taylor, a local physician, will
deliver the last lecture of the “Health
and Strength Series,” Wednesday
evening, May 15, on “A True View of
Four Sex Lies.” His address will be
a scientific and constructive talk on
false ideas entertained by men gener
