J. L. Johnson is wmrking out a se ries of experiments on the upward pressure of water on the base of a dam built on a sand foundation. Where dams can not be built on rock, they are not always satisfactory, and the problem of building such dams has not yet been solved. Bob Kellogg and Sid Henderson are engaged in experiments on the dens ity of concrete to determine what pro portions of stone and sand will give the most dense concrete. A number of specimens are now ready to be tested by compression, which will be done as soon as the necessary appa ratus can be obtained. J. V. Rast and C. R. Oleson are studying the problem of waterproof ing concrete by means of crude oil mixed in with the concrete, taking into account the effect of the oil on the strength of the concrete. Harry Devereaux is experimenting on the quality of a large number of building sands obtained from different parts of the state, to determine their comparative value. They have anal yzed the sand chemically to see if the chemical properties have any ap preciable effect upon the strength of the sand. Ed. Himes is trying out the relative value of reinforced concrete sewer pipe and the ordinary vitrified clay pipe. Tt is expected that the majority of these theses will be completed within the next month. Tuttle’s Studio Patterson and 13th Streets. Our pictures are strong, soft and round.
