HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE
Salem High School expects to turn
out an exceptionally strong track
team this year. A number of prom
ising candidates have started train
ing, and under the efficient tutelage
of M. V. Davis, former University of
Oregon star track man, a strong team
should be developed.
The Dalles High School debating
team won from Astoria High School
team on February 27 by a 3 to 0 de
cision. The subject of discussion was:
“Resolved, that the federal govern
ment should extend the parcels post
system as advocated by Postmaster
General George VonL. Meyers.”
The students of Jefferson High
School, of Portland, have taken a
stand against extravagance, and will
hereafter try to promote democracy
and simplicity of dress as much as
possible. The senior class recently
adopted the following resolutions:
(1) That they will keep their grad
uating expenses down to the lowest
possible figure; (2) That they will
avoid all unnecessary expenses, such
as class dues and engraved invita
tions.
The Dal’es High School is planning
a tennis tournament for both girls and
boys, to be held sometime in the
spring.
A few of the Eugene High School
track men have begun light training.
Last year Eugene turned out a strong
team and prospects seem fairly bright
for this year.
A number of the Oregon High
Schools are preparing to send men to
the all-Coast Inter-scholastic Track
Meet to be held in California in May.
This will be one of the largest High
School events ever held on the Coast.
The championship of the Coos Bay
section of the state debating league
was won by North Bend High School.
This team will meet the team from
the southern Oregon district.
i TOM KELLY DISCOVERS
BUNGALOW ON CAMPUS
Tom Kelly, Oregon’s genial base
ball coach for the season of 1909, is
at present renewing acquaintences
among the old leaguers on the cam
pus. “Father” Tom has lost none
of his Celtic cunning and ready store
of wit as was shown by an incident
during baseball practice, last Thurs
day night.
The future wearers of the varsity
stripes, together with a liberal turn
out of “excess baggage,” were frisk
ing about the park in pursuit of the
official pellet, when one of Oregon’s
poetic April showers, with all the ear
marks of the Hepner cloud burst,
threatened to dampen the display of
riotous enthusiasm, and to stampede
the more nervous “colts” to the
friendly shelter of the gym.
“Come on in the Christian Science
Bungalow,” yelled Kelly, retreating
into a far corner of one of the wire
covered batting cages.
