OREGON TRACK TEAM HAS STRONG NUCLEUS Number of Veterans Assure Points on the Varsity Score Column. The prospects for a winning track team for Oregon this season are neither bright or particularly discour i ging. 1 he team will be materially strengthened by Hawkins, the fleet hurdler, and Williams, the superb vaulter, both of whom have returnei to c ollege. These two men. with Kel logg, Johns, Neill, and other good men, make up a nucleus for a team which is pretty sure to covet a generous number of first places. There is, however, a lack of second and third place men, and according to Bill Hayward, Oregon’s reliable authority on track, these second and third place men are prime factors in winning a close meet and comprise the most of the material from which the future track teams are to be made. This season’s squad appears weak est in the jumps and sprints. A wealth of material is reported to be in college this year and good men may be developed in every department if they can be induced to turn out and work faithfully. There will be a number of inter class and fraternity track events pulled off, within the next three weeks. The class cross country is to be the first and will be held next Sat urday afternoon, at 2:30. The con testants will run once around the track, over the regular two mile course and finish with a quarter on the var sity course. A silver cup will be given to the winning class, while gold, silver and bronze medals will be given to the winners of first, second, and third places. The dates have not yet been defin ately set for the class track meet and the class relay, for which silver cups will be awarded. An inter-fraternity cross country, relay, and track meet will also take place some time in the near future. The purpose of these contests is to de velop a healthy interest in track and to add to the number of ever welcome candidates for varsity stripes. GERMAN CLUB DISCUSSES CITY LIFE IN GERMANY The meeting of the Verein Germa nia last Tuesday night at the Beth Rhea House was occupied with the subject, “The City Life of Germany.” A general talk on the topic was given by Mabel Lane; a recitation, “Hoffnung,” by Grace Adams; a talk, “Life in the Lodgings,” by Vernon Motschenbacher; a poem, “Frueh ling,” by Olive Zimmerman; a talk, “Der Arbeiter,” by Howard Zimmer man; a solo, by Rose Basler; and a valuable talk on life in Berlin, by David Campbell, who spent the last two years in Germany. The next meeting, a week from next Tuesday night, will be held in the Gamma Delta Gamma House. The subject is, “German Domestic Life,” and the program will include such topics as “Woman and the Home.” and “The Kaiser’s Family Life.” MYSTERY SHROUDS WIERD DISCOVERY IN CO-ED GYM An incident which will provide most palatable food for the varsity gossips is the finding of a man’s cap within the sacred confines of the women’s gymnasium by the janitor of that cit adel. The cap is of the plaid variety, be ing of a gray color, checkered with black stripes, while in the lining were found engraved the initials ‘‘L. M. J.” It was recognized as identical in appearance with the familiar cranial covering which has heretofore adorned the dream-box of Le Roy M. Johnson, Oregon's debating coach and forensic instructor. This fact, coupled with that of the tell-tale initials, left no doubt that the head-piece was in real ity the property of Johnson. Accord ingly, it was returned to him, and has since been seen crowning his genial physiognomy. The question which local Pinker ton’s are trying to solve is: What was Johnson’s mission in violating the sanctity of the co-ed’s stronghold, as suming that in no other way can the presence of the dome protector be ex plained? Ignorant of the iron-clad injunction against masculine invasion, did he enter Dr. Stuart’s Venus fac tory merely with the idea of explora tion, or did he have some ulterior mo tive? The mystery is deepened by the re fusal of the exponent of the Ciceron ian art to make any explanations. It is reported, however, that he has re considered a previous decision not to attend the debate in Seattle Saturday, and will instead accompany the team on the trip in order to escape the ig nominy incident to the exposure.
