Look at the Score and See.
Dr. Leonard’s score board after the
Tri-state meet was an inspiring am
edifying sight. The victory was ar
excellent spring tonic calculated to re
vivify the Oregon spirit.
Oregon, 72; Washington, 61; Idaho,
17, or in other words, Oregon repeated
its old trick of taking more points
than both its competitors. The phot
ographs of the score board should be
framed and hung up, as articles of
permanent interest and value to serve
as perpetual rebukes and denials to
the croakers who have been prophesy
ing that the sceptre had forever de
parted from Judah, and that Hayward
could never come back.
Deep and extended contemplation of
that scoreboard would be good not
only for our students but for the
Washingtonians. It is unfortunate
that the board cannot be moved in
tact, and set up in the midst of the
Washington campus, or that the score
cannot be deeply engraved in the cor
ner stone of Denny Hall, there to
serve as a perpetual warning against
arrogance that goeth before humilia
tion.
For the past two years our north
ern friends have been riding for a
hard fall. They have assumed a hec
toring attitude toward their neigh
bors and have attempted to dominate
in Northwest Conference affairs. This
spring, they tacitly arrogated to them
selves victory and flippantly enquired
“Who is Rill Hayward?” The sound
trouncing we gave them Saturday was
not only admirably adapted to answer
their query, but will also serve to im
pres upon them the fact that the
Northwest is still a bit larger than
the University of Washington, and
the City of Seattle.
Of course there will be a roar go up
and indeed the opening gun has al
ready boon fired in a Portland paper,
explaining and proving how Wash
ington could easily defeat us on a neu
tral field. Those who saw Saturday’s
meet, however, and observed the rela
tive merits of the two teams, will not
take seriously any such charges.
Probably, indeed, the same old famil
iar cry of “robbed” will be raised
heavenward when we defeat Wash
ington on the gridiron next fall.
Meanwhile Rill Hayward wears a
happy smile and is too busy receiv
ing congratulations to bother about
telling any one who he is.
The Quality of Mercy.
The petitions asking clemency for
Kelly and Grayson which are receiving
such hearty support from the entire
student body, may not. in themselves
be of any great force in mollifying
the drastic action of the faculty, but
they will, at least, serve to show that
the students who are most familiar
with the curcumstanees, and who
should be the best judges of the spirt
and motive of the prank, consider
the severe action of the factulty un i
warranted.
and cannt lofraill— 1 Uln:l Th fea
The faculty did not attend the Frolic
and can form its judgment only upon
hearsay and testimony. Surely the
University women, who were there,
are the best judges as to just how
culpable the whole thing was, and
just how serious was the invasion
upon their privacy. The University
women, some at least, connived at and
even assitsed in the masquerade. Many
of them knew the men were among
them, yet they are unanimous in con
sidering the whole affair a joke, and
are peitioning for leniency toward the
offenders.
The whole thing was conceived in
the spirit of fun, the University wo
men, who if any, are the injured ones,
regard the whole matter as a joke,
and the criminal aspect put upon it
by the faculty investigation denotes
either misinterpretation of the whole
affair, or an application of ideas of
prudishness.
