INTERESTING CONTEST
FOIT CARNIVAL QUEEN
Committee is Now Canvassing for
List of Entries in All
the Events
The report about the campus th.it
several of the candidates for the
election to queen of the Canoe Carni
val had withdrawn is incorrect. All
those whose names are announced
are in the race.
Rumors were current that the me
thod of choosing the queen was en
countering the opposition of the fac
ulty and also the Dean of Women.
These reports are also incorrect, as
the faculty has made no objection
and Mrs. Pennell has sanctioned the
plan. The contest will close Satur
day at noon and the winner will be
announced in the Emerald of that
day.
The committee is now at work per
fecting arrangements for the parade
and consulting with several of the
’Varsity artists for points and sug
gestions as to how to make the pa
geant the most distinctive and beau
tiful. A float will be built for the
queen, to be drawn by three canoes.
The queen will choose the young
men to paddle the float and will also
select the two lady attendants for the
evening. Each class will enter a
float, as will most of the student
organizations. A number of canoes
arranged to burleque features of col
lege life and will also be in the pa
rade. Arrangements are now under
way to secure a band or stringed or
chestra for the occasion.
Some comment has been made over
the fact that three of the twelve
contests were open only, to teams
from the clubs and fraternities, it
being charged that this was unduly
restricting the entries and that they
should be thrown open to the public
generally. This was made with the
expectation that this classification
would include the Oregon Club and
would thus be practically inclusive of
every one. The events were also
team contests where a cup will be
donated and if the members are pick
ed at random there will be no suitable
place to keep the trophy. However,
if men or women not affiliated with
any organization desire to enter these
events, no objection will be raised.
Provided enough entries can be
obtained to make it worth while, a
high diving contest will be scheduled
and platforms built on the trees on
the banks of the race.
BUT SIX JUNIORS WILL EN
TER WEEK-END TALK FEST
Only six Juniors will orate during
Junior Week End. Miss Birdie Wise
and Leon Ray have withdrawn from
the contest on account of too much
other work. Miss Fay Clark has
consented to take part in the Ora
toricals so that at least half a dozen
Juniors would be represented in this
field. Those still intending to orate
are:
1. Miss Grace Adams, “Vengeance
Without the Law.”
2. Miss Hazel Wightman—The
Lure of the Country.”
Ralph Moores, “The Spirit of
the Oregon Pioneer.”
4. Miss Alma Payton, “The Solid
South.”
5. Wm. E. St. John, “The Abuse
of the Injunction.”
b. Miss Fay Clark, “The Awaken
ing of the Conscience.”
