The ca-ed debate between Wash ington and Oegon will be one of the interesting events of next w eek. For the second tine in the history of the Universi'v, the co-eds will have the honor of defending Oregon in an intercolllegiate forensic contest. A year ago they lost at Seattle but next Friday they intend to “come back” and carry off the honors. To win the victory will not be an easy task for Washington has a strong team and it is coming here with the intention of avenging the de feat of Hoover and Clifford at the hands of Ray and Zimmerman last month. The Washington women will attempt to prove that Congress should adopt an income tax and according to Coach Buchen their side of the ques tion is, in theory, the stronger. Ore gon’s team, Bridie Wise, Corin Deger mark, and Lilah Clark, are working several hours each day preparing for the contest and are ready to discuss any phase of the question. Miss Mary Perkins will act as chairman of the evening. oooooo oooooo o Dave McDaniel announces an o o important meeting of the Junior o o Class Monday evening at 4, in Dr. o o Schmidt’s room. o oooooooooooooooboo U. of 0. MARIS AND GEISLER BRAVE RAPIDS ON PORTLAND TRY During the recent spring vacation Homer Maris, T3 and Raphael Geisler, ’12, made the trip down the river to Portland in their canoes. The voyage took three days and although fur nishing considerable excitement and pleasure in the way of shooting rapids and camping out, no accidents oc curred. This trip is becoming more and more popular with varsitw canoe ists and every spring several boat loads make the trip. Earlier in the spring Bones Allen and Fred Ingles also took this trip. “At Yale,” the play the Dramatic Club is going: to present on May 11, of Junior Week End may not be pre sented in the Eugene Theater unless Manager Smith can get the Russian Musical Company to cancel their date. If the play “At Yale” is presented at the theater the charges will be 50 cents to a dollar, if at Villard Hall, the charges will be arranged later. Assistant Track Manager Homer has resigned and Fen Waite and Fred Myers have been appointed to attend to the minor duties of putting the track in shape for the dual meet with Whitman May 6. “Judge” says that the fact that it takes two men to fill the position alone shows that the assistant manager business is no snap. MUST KISS YOUR HOPES OF WEALTH GOODBYE You Must Do This If You Expect to Be a Man of Honesty and Prin ciple, Says Speaker. “If you are going to take the Golden Rule into business, you might as well kiss your hopes of wealth good-bye, for it is practically impossible for a man to get a million dollars today and still observe the principles of honor and truth.” This was the candid conclusion as expressed by Mr. E. B. McNaughton of Portland, who addressed the men’s meeting of the Y. M. C. A. last night, on the “Golden Rule in the Business World.” Unlike many who assert that material suc cess will follow the application of the highest Christian principles in business, this man, an experienced business man and one who is rec ognized as a leader in his profession, was honest enough to declare that as industry is today, the man who is determined to be absolutely true to his highest principles need never hope for wealth, unless as Mr. MacNaugh ton, expressed it, “his mule kicks the top out of a gold mine.” A feature of this meeting was a vocal solo by Miss Edna Miller. The address by Dr. Beardsley, which was scheduled for May 12 under the impression that Junior Week End would come on May 5, will be changed te May 5, and May 12 will be left free fo rthe Week End festivities. Dr. Beardsley will speak on “The respon sibilities of the Physician, next Fri day evening. CO-ED OPERA CLEARS GOOD SUM FOR NEST EGG. The sum total taken in by the Girls’ Glee Club which presented the “Prin cess Chrysanthemum,” at the Eugene Theater, April 13, was $350. The expenditures which include the rent ing of the costumes, the wisteria flowers, the theater, the remuneration for the coaching and the incidentals of $20, the use of which will be de cided at a later meeting. This amount will probably be left in the treasury to be used towards financing a pro duction to be given next year as a similar opera is to be given annually by the Girls’ Glee Club. Alice Stoddard has been elected to the Scroll and Script Honor Society. Miss Stoddard is a member of the Lambda Rho sorority, and is a prom inent Senior girl, taking an active part in the work of the Y. W. C. A., the Women’s Council and college acti vities generally. The Whitman College management asked that that the hammer throw and the two-mile be eliminated from the calender of events in the coming meet and received a refusal from both Track Manager Barbour and Manager Cox of 0. A. C. The entire schedule will be run through as usual. OBAK CIGAR STORE Call and see the most com plete line of Pipes on the Coast. . . We repair pipes. Cor. Eighth and Willamette Sts.
