The next contests along the forensic
line will be the triangular debates held
March 31st simultaneously at the Uni
versities of Washington and Oregon
and Stanford University.
The debate at Eugene will be between
Oregon’s affirmative team, composed oi
Ray and Zimmerman, and a negative
team from Washington. Collier and
Motschenbacher, who compose Ore
gon’s negative team, will debate at
Stanford.
The men are training strenuously for
the contests. Every evening the twc
teams are pitted against each other b>
Coach Buchen, and they are learning
to present every aspect of the ship sub
sidy question. “If thorough prepara
tion will win,” says Mr. Buchen, “we
have the victory.”
As this is the first year that Stan
ford has debated the colleges of the
Northwest, the contest at Stanford wil
be especially interesting. The contesl
at Villard Hall will attract attention
because Oregon will be again pitted
against her northern rival, the Uni
versity of Washington.
Last year debate was the only activ
ity in which Oregon defeated Washing
ton, and it was the only activity ir
which she won a Northwest champion
ship. According to those in dost
touch with the debaters, she will re
peat the performance again this year.
Several spelling classes have recently
been organized at Wellesley.

SEEKS RECOGNITION
Edward J. Himes Tells of Plans
for Hawthorne Avenue
Bridge
Ihe Engineering Club met last night
1 in Deady Hall and listened to a short, i
| but interesting, program. The princi
ple business of the evening was a discus
i sion of the advisability of asking for
recognition by the American Institute
of Civil Engineers. The club feels that
' if the proposition is taken up in the
proper way it will be able to receive
the same recognition as other institu
tions of the same standard. It is hoped
that the members of the faculty who
are 'affiliated with the American In
stitute will use their influence to pre
j sent the name of the University En
[ gineering Club to the national society.
The principal number on the pro
gram last night was a talk by Edward
J. Himes on the construction of the
Hawthorne Avenue bridge, in Port
land. He explained the method of con
struction of the piers and also the op
eration of the lift span.
The second number was an address
by J. Lewis Johnson on the methods of
stream measurements, including sound
ing, location of details, and quantity of
water in river.
The picture of the Engineering Club
taken recently on the Library steps was
shown. Those who desire one can give
their order to J. P. McGuire.
TROUBADOURS “BEAT IT”
WHEN NOT APPRECIATED
A few days ago "Sap” and Ralph de
cided, by a process of induction and
I deep reasoning, that they had music in
their souls; also it tingled in their hu
ger tips and a little, a very little, was
evident in their vocal chords.
With another seance of mighty pou
dering they came to the conclusion that
a thing of beauty was a joy forever,
land that it should be shared with the*
civilized world. I he Gamma Phi Betas
were chosen to be hrst showered with
this great blessing. Accompanied by a
guitar, a banjo and the aforementioned
vocal chords, plus tingling linger tips,
the indomitable duo started and arrived.
Slowly the magnificent chords of the
bassos rose into the air until they
reached the house tops, wfien lo, the
heavens opened wide—or was it the win
dow?—and liquid refreshment descend
ed in torrents, or posibly in tubfuls.
There was an exclamation of some kind,
a rending and a snap, the tension has
slackened, the last chord is done, and
the crestfallen troubadours, wiping the
moisture from their brows, silently beat
into the darkness.
KAPPA GIGMA HOLDS
ANNUAL FORMAL HOP
Kappa Sigma is giving its annual for
mal in the University Gymnasium this
evening. About one hundred and fifty
invitations are out. After the danc
ing, supper will be served in the new
fraternity house.
