W. C. A. and. their friends. Miss Kawaii, who ts a native of 1 okio and a gradu ate of Bryn Mawr College, is visiting friends in the West, and at the request of the Territorial Asociation of the \. W. C. A., is giving personal lectures, educational as well as religious, to the girls of each college of the Northwest ern states. Her magnetic enthusiasm, charming foreign accent, and delightful witticisms held both the heart and the ear of the listener as she compared the cramped and narrow life of the Japanese to the wholesome freedom of our American girl. She proved that even though ed ucation, styles and customs are different from those of the Japanese, that in the Christian religion nationalities are merged. * Her appeal was for material aid for the Christian organization in Japan which corresponds to our Young Wo men’s Christian Association, and was generously responded to'by pledge sub scriptions, made under the supervision of Mrs. Clarke, Secretary of the Ad visory Board. Mrs. Clarke announced that she will gladly receive or collect all the money thus subscribed, and she desires that it be paid before the close! of the college year. Take, for instance, the classes in the engineering department. A new building was completed last year to care for the increase in the depart- ■ i ment, but even now it is too small. The I class in structural mechanics is over I I three times as large now as it has ever j been. Not only is the student denied the individual attention from the in-1 structor, but laboratory periods have been shortened and decreased in number. Heretofore each student had the use of the testing laboratory three hours per week; now they have but two hours per week, and have to skip every third week. It is very evident that some of the work is missed entirely, or else skipped over hurriedly. This is the fun da ment.;!ly course in engineering prac tice, and should be the most thorough. Other courses, such as graphic statics, j surveying, drawing, concrete, hydrau- j lies, etc., are seriously handicapped be cause of over-crowding and lack of adequate laboratories. The people of this state wonder why it is that the graduates of the state in stitutions do not have the standing that! the graduates of our neighboring state schools have, but fail to see that a large part of the difficulty is their unwilling ness to spend a dollar or two each for the proper equipment of their own col leges. Plaiis arc formulated for the en larging and improving of the depart | merits, which plans are delayed only by Ihe lack of sufficient funds. I INTER-CLASS^STRUGGLE BEGINS NEXT WEEK 'Fhe girls’ inter-class teams for the i Hayward cup will begin next week, j i hey will be played every afternoon be tween five and six o’clock in the men’s ! gymnasium, but nevertheless all men arc tabooed. J lie schedule is being prepared and J will be announced later in the week, j Each of the captains is very anxious ' that every girl in her class make an especial effort to be out for practice, as everybody who either knows the game or is ambitions athletically is need ed, and will have a chance to play. None of the teams are as yet chosen. Each class will have a team and each team will pi y each of the other three. The elimination method will not be used in these games, but the championship will be determined upon a percentage basis DR. SHELDON TO SPEAK ON “ETHICS OF BIBLE.” This meeting will not interfere with the Oratorical Contest. It will begin promptly at seven and will close not later than seven fifty. All the men of the schol are invited. Dr. H. D. Sheldon will address the men’s meeting on Friday evening, speaking on the subject, “The Ethics of the Bible.” Dr. Sheldon is known among the students as a clear, thor ough thinker, and in presenting this subject he will undoubtedly have many ideas of value to offer. This is the third address of the se ries of discussions of the Bible and is one of the most important. The real practicability of the “turn the otther cheek” theory, for example, is an idea which thinking college men are usu ally much perplexed over. A feature of special interest for this meeting will be a vocal solo by Dr. Beardsley. COME OUT AND SEE THE FRESHMEN POSE The Freshman class committee re quests all the 1914 hopefuls to assemble on the steps of the Library at 4:00 next Friday, there to be photographed ensemble for the Oregana.
