MANy VARSITY PEOPLE
SEE MARY MANNERING
Great Actress Gives Forcible
Presentation of a “Man’s
World”
Eugene theater goers were given a
rare opportunity Friday evening to see
one of the strongest and best of mod
ern plays interpreted by Mary Manner
ing, in a manner which left nothing
more to he desired. “A Man’s World,"
is the story of one woman who rettfses
to accept the double standard of morals
—one for men and another for women,
i he heroine rebels against the ethical
system which allows a man to do with
impunity that which a woman must
pay for with her life, honor, and every
thing which makes her life worth liv
ing Neither will she passively accept
that "this is a man's world. Man sets
the standard for woman. He knows that
she is better than he is, and if she isn't
she has to suffer for it. Men are men.”
Mary Maunering, as Frank Ware, the
successful, talented and idealistic woman
who lives up to and puts- into practice
her ideals and theories, refusing to mar
ry the man she loves, because he does
not measure up to her standards, inter
prets her lines with an extraordinary
vividness, genuineness and charm. She
is ttblyr supported by Alphonse Ethier
as Malcolm Gaskell, who insists upon
the double standards and lives to make
Frank look at things as he himself
does. Mark Short, as Kiddie, the name
less little hoy whom Frank adopted as
a baby, is as natural a child actor as
one could wish to see. Chas. Cryngat *,
as Fritz Bohn, the unsuccessful, lova
ble musician, and Claude Boyd as Em
i’iic Grimraux, the French artist, are
both deserving of much praise.
Taken as a whole, “A Man’s World”
is one of the best of recent dramas and
presents its lesson and problem clearly
and cleanly. The audience was remark
able because of the great number of
Varsity people present.
MANAGER COCKERLINE
DOPING OUT SCHEDULE
In addition to the above schedule,
Manager Cockerline announces that sev
eral other games will be played o nthe
home floor. Next Saturday night the
Varsity will play either the fast quintet
from the Oregon School of Medicine
or a team from Portage, Wisconsin,
which will be through here about that
time. It may be decided to play both
teams. A game will be played with the
Woodburn Athletic Club some time be
tween February 7th and 17th. It is
probable that several other contests will
be scheduled to fill in between the con
ference games.
O. A. C. Needs $410,000
FOR NEXT TWO YEARS
In line with the rapid growth of ed
ucational facilities throughout the state
and in conjunction with our request for
a similar amount, the Oregon Agricul
tural College has asked the present leg
islature for an appropriation of $410,
000, which is about one thousand more
than Oregon is asking.
Among the interesting items is one
for $70,000 annually for maintennance
in addition to its present amount. Ad
ditional buildings, books, facilities, in
structors and other necessary items are
recommended.
“The. cost of living’s very high,” the
student murmured with a sigh; “when
T have paid my laundry bill and nicely
lined some merchant’s till, and bought
my “eats” and other stuff, my chqfck
book’s looking pretty tough. There’s
something wrong, somewhere, I think,
this world is surely on the "blink,” and
figures don’t amount to shucks, when
living costs so many “bucks.”
The Tri Deltas entertained Mr. and
Mrs. Brown and Dr. and Mrs. Clark
at dinner Thursday evening.
Miss Helen Kinney, ex-’ll, of Leona,
Oregon, is visiting at the Tri Delta
house.
PROF. DUNN PUBLISHES
ARTICLE ONG.J.GAESAR
Has Made Extensive Study of
Deification of Roman
Emperors
—
Professor F. S. Dunn is the recipient
of considerable honor in the recent pub
lication of a scholarly paper of his in
the proceedings of the American Philo
logical Association. The paper deals
with the “Deification of Julius Caesar."
and is the result of an extensive study
by him of the life and work of Caesar.
I he paper opens with a brief resume of
I the general causes which led up to Cae
sar worship, and then takes up in detail
a rehearsal of the actual events which
led to Caesar's deification by the Ro
mans. Its discussion is chiefly confined
to the incidents which preceded or im
mediately followed his assassination.
The article closes with the aggres
sive measures of the Consuls, Antony
and Dolabella, in suppressing the wor
ship of Caesar.
Professor Dunn has written a number
of tracts dealing with classical subjects,
many of which have been recorded hon
orable recognition.
VARSITY WINS FROM P. U.

the court.
The Juniors put up the poorest game
of basketball that they have played this
year, and the Sophs the best. There is
a rumor afloat that the Sophs enticed
some of the Junior players down to the
bean feed, and thus rendered them grog
gy for the consummation of the Lara
way cup series.
