Bill and Remnant of Flag Given to College Two curios were presented to Pres ident Campbell this summer by Rev. Lathrop, of Fairmount. One is a small rectangular section of the Confederate dag which doated over Richmond, Va.. when that city was captured by the Un ion forces in 1865. The other is a ten dollar note of Confederate currency, surrendered at the time Lee's forces laid down their arms at Appomatox. These articles were secured by A. B. Lawrence, a brigadier general in the Union army. Rev. Lathrop, in whose hands the cu rios had recently fallen, presented them to the University museum. They are now in one of the cases in the north wing of the library. • UNIVERSITY WILL SEND NEWS TO ALL PAPERS The University of Oregon is enter ing a new field of advertising. An elev en hundred word news bulletin, contain ing all news of interest about the Uni versity, will be issued each week and sent to the county papers for publication. The bulletin will be made up Mondays and sent in cast form to the papers. It will be released for publication on Thursday so that all papers may publish it at the same time. Robert W. Pres cott will have charge of this work and will be assisted by his class in journal ism. It is thought that the bulletin will aid in bringing the University and its doings nearer to the people and will thereby" develop a more kindly feeling among the taxpayers for their Univer sity. Mr. Prescott said: “The University belongs to the people, and they should be made to feel that it does. They should know what is really going on in this University, and the purpose of this bul letin will be to acquaint them with the nature of our activities.” PRESS CLUB ORGANIZED Co-operation of Press Men of University Its Purpose The members of the staffs of the va rious University publications met at the Dormitory Friday eveniig and organized a University press cblu. The election of officers resulted in J. D. Collins be ing declared President, Ralph Moores Vice President, D. L. Dobie Secretary, Cassidy Kennedy Treasurer, and William Lowell Sergeant at Arms. The pur pose of tne club is to promote co-opera ion and good fellowship among the press men of the University. The club will endeavor to arouse interest in newspaper work and increase the efficiency of the University publications. Membership has been limited to the men intimately con nected with the various student body publications. A motion was made and passed to give an initiatory banquet on Hallowe’en eve. UNIVERSITY* LIBRARY OPEN ALL NOON HOUR The University Library will be open during the whole noon hour this year. Formerly it has been closed from twelve to twelve-thirty, hut this year Librarian Douglas says that so many of the students who take lunch on the campus have asked permission to work in the library during the noon hour, that he has decided to keep it open during the whole period. MISS ROWLAND STARTS WOMAN'S CHOU CLUB Twenty Have Already Joined— Prospects Bright As a result of a long-felt need among the women of the University, steps arc rapidly being taken toward the organi zation of a Woman’s Choral Club, at the head of which will be Miss Ethel M. Rowland, of the Music Department of the University. The chorus, which will contain the best women voices in college, is being formed with a view toward increasing the interest in mu sic and voice cultivation. Already over twenty of the women of the school have tried out for places, and Miss Rowland expresses herself as well pleased and states that there is splendid material in the school for a first-class musical organization. 1 he club will have an organization, with necessary officers, and will select a suitable name for itself at an early date. At present there is in sight no extended tour, such as for the men’s glee club, but they will be heard at several assemblies during the year, and if present plans carry, a splendid con cert will be given in the spring. Miss Rowland takes charge of this work with much ability and experience. She came here from Boston, where she studied under John Marshall and Pro fessor Merrill for a number of years. She will give lessons in harmony, sight reading, history of music, as well as teaching in the school system. She has had considerable experience as a di rector of choruses, and is entering the work with an earnestness and zest that cannot fail to meet with deserving suc cess. Alumni—Notice!
