AMBITIOUS FRESHMEN, BESTIR YOURSELVES new men are reticent ABOUT PRODUCING COPY The Monthly Needs Several Freshmen as General Contribu tors; also Illustrators. Dean Collins, editor of the Oregon Monthly, speaking to an Emerald re porter, last night said : “ 1 he Monthly needs several good freshmen, both as general contributors and to cover spec ial assignments and also some good ar tists and illustrators. It seems to be the feeling among many of the new stu dents that they are not wanted unless they are hunted up and asked personal ly to contribute, and accordingly they do nothing. Of course this is not the case—the freshmen are practically all strangers to us and we have no way of finding out their attainments. It is up to those who have literary inclinations to come forward and make themselves known. Obviously we cannot pick them out. When we know who wants to work we will do all in our power to help him along. The Monthly offers excellent opportunities for practice and training in English as well as for work ing with an editorship later on. I wish that those freshmen who .arc interested in literary work would come to me or one of the assistant editors and talk over what they have done and what particular line they wish to follow.” SWIFT SECURES COVEltU CORNELL SCHOLARSHIP ONLY TWO ARE GRANTED IN THE UNITED STATES Frank H.' Swift, who was graduated last June in Electrical Engineering, has been awarded a Fellowship in E. E. at Cornell. This is remarkable because there are but two fellowships in E. E. offered in the United States by this University. Mr. Swift lived at Creswell and was graduated from the Eugene High School. He entered the University of Oregon in 1906 and maintained a high average in all his work here. During bis Junior and Senior years he was in structor in Machine Shop practice. He received special mention for thesis work carried on jointly with Edwin Platts, TO. The thesis consisted of a beautiful switchboard designed and built by the two boys. During commencement week it was exhibited in Villard Hall and later installed by the makers in the Electrical laboratory. Last spring Mr. Swift received an appointment to a position of trust in the General Electric Company’s plant at Schnectady, N. Y., but when notified of bis success in the competitive exam ination for the fellowship he resigned and went to Ithaca. Harold O’Neill, of the class of 1912. in Civil Engineering, will not enter I school until the second semester. He is in business as a building contractor in Grants Pass.
