Safety Rules Should Come
With Gift Of A New Bike
Nothing brightens a boy's
eyes like seeing a bicycle under
the Christmas tree. The gleam
of bright .new paint, the shine
of metal spokes and the flash
of handle bars are reflected in
his eyes.
As a parent you should make
sure that the bike that you buy
him has all the equipment that
he needs not' the flashy ac
cessories that impress the kid
next door, but the basic safety
equipment required for safe bi
cycling. He also needs to be
told or reminded about bike
riding rules.
One way to do this is to see
that the child participates in a
national safety program being

Parakeet
Popular
Pet-Gift
Want to give relatives and
friends an extra surprise ' this
Christmas? Then plan on giving
a parakeet, the third most pop
ular pet, right behind puppies
and kittens.
This suggestion comes from
a pet bird laboratory in Ro
chester,. N.Y., which reports
that for the last several years
these clever little birds have
become increasingly popular
as gift items.
They suggest too, that, the
bird be taught a Christmas
greeting for an added touch
Parakeets learn from constant
repetition of words and phras
es, a spokesman points out.
'It's merely a matter of time
and patience." You may not
get your parakeet to learn "Si
lent Night" between now and
Christmas, but chances arc he'll
reward you with a cherry yule-
tide geeeting if you spend just
few minutes a day on his
education.
Mom can probably do the best
job, say the experts, because
its easier for birds to mimic the
high tones of a woman's voice.
In any case, only one person
should be elocution coach to
the bird.
Tips For Cart
For new parakeet owners
here are some tips:
1. Don't expect too much of
your pet right away. It takes
a few days for him to adjust
to new surroundings and he
may act dull and drowsy. At
first, it's wise to keep his cage
covered for several hours dur
ing the day. Before long, your
pet will feel settled and will
be his usual playful, friendly
self.
2. Try not to frighten or ox
cite him. Move quietly when
near the cage and talk to him
in a soft, calm voice.
3. Keep the cage out of direct
sunlight and drafts and in
spot where the bird will not
be subject to sudden, extreme
changes in temperature.
4. Feed your bird daily. And
don't mistake a dish of empty
seed hulls for a full cup of
seed. His diet should consist of
seed, treat, conditioning food
cuttle bone, and gravel, . plus
fresh water. Add spray millet
or a treat bell from time to
time for extra enjoyment.
Keep Cage Clean
5. Keep the bird cage clean
The food and water cups should
be emptied and cleaned daily
Change . the paper liner on the
cage bottom and sprinkle with
fresh gravel every few days
Scrape, do not wash, the perch
es when necessary.
The care and feeding of
parakeet are really so simple
that a child can be given the
cnmnlplp' rpsnnnsihilitv. As a
matter offact, parakeets arc
more and more frequently found
in nursery schools, kindergar
tens, and lower grades, where
they become classroom proj
ccts.

Making Christmas Cards
Is Fun--And It's Easy Too
WASHINGTON (UPI) Top
House Republicans warned re
cently against what they called
efforts to make "Americans
generally" feel guilty in the
assassination of President Ken
nedy.
At the same time they served
notice that sorrow at the Presi
dent's death will not be allowed
to impede honest debate and
dissent.
There is guilt," they said.
'but it is not American guilt,
It is the guilt of the murderer
There is hatred, fanaticism
and bigotry in the world but
America is not its source or
loyal Americans its practition
ers. America instead has
worked hard against these
forces and continues to do so
However, Sen. J. William Ful-
bright took a different view. In
a speech Thursday, he put the!
blame for Kennedy's death on
the nation's heritage of puritan
self-righteousness and vigilante
justice. By renouncing extrem
ism, Fulbright said, the nation
might find some redemption for
Kennedy's death.
But the GOP leaders said the
time has come to assure thai
Americans are not now divided
and confused by "suspicion, dis
trust and unwarranted accusa
lions."
"We are told that hate was
the assassin that struck down
the President," they said in a
formal statement by the 36
member House Republican Pol
icy Committee.
"If it was hatred that moved
the assassin, that hatred was
bred by the teachings of com
munism. All the evidence so far
presented affirms this.
"Efforts to make Americans
generally feci guilty of the
crime now are obscuring the
nature of the crime. Rather
than setting American against
American, as easily could hap
pen if guilt is misplaced and
doubt becomes a device of no
litical debate, the tragic event
should serve to set the face and
heart of all Americans firmly
against the warped and alien
doctrine which, alone in the
world today, preaches destine
tion of societies and freedoms,
employs murder as a tool, and
threatens violence around the
globe from a base of major na
tional power.
All you need, to make your
own distinctive Christinas cards,
is a little artistic talent, lots
of spare time, plenty of pa
tience and some scraps of
cloth!
If you have these things, then
this article is for you.
The first step is to select
the envelope. It's much easier
to cut your cards to fit the
envelopes than to have to make
or try to find envelopes to fit
your cards.
Start with a nice piece of
card-weight paper, folded in
half so your message can be
written inside.
Next, sketch or trace the de
sign you like (keep it very sim
ple) onto a piece of tracing pa
per. Then transfer the sketch
to your card by means of car
bon paper. Try to keep the pen
cil lines light.
Now you're ready to cut the
pieces of fabric that you will
paste into position on the card.
To do this, use the original de
sign and trace the section you
want on the back side of the
fabric. Cut out and paste into
place.
Small feathers, beads, braids,
woven tapes, lace and doilies
can be used, too. Just make
sure that you use a good glue.
paper adhesive tape.
'Third, buy your postage
stamps now. Be sure to use tha
colorful new five cent Christmas
Tree (tamps on your cards.
"Fourth, procure free labels
from your post office which
read "All For Local Delivery"
and "All For Out-Of-Town De
livery," so that you can sort
your Christmas cards into two
groups, with addresses all fac
ing one way, thus insuring fast
delivery.
"Fifth, be sure that your full
name and address is on all of
your Christmas card envelopes
and shipping . labels and be
doubly sure to include your
ZIP Code number in your return
address." -;
The postmaster especially
quests that residents schedulo
their Christmas mailings so that
all of cards and gift packages
going to most distant points are
mailed by Dec. 10. Those for
local destinations should be
mailed at least a week before
Christmas, Snider said. ,
