Figurines Prove Popular
For Collector Of Any Age
Dinner
Antwar to Previou Putll
Authentic "Hummel" ceramic
figurines have been top-ranking
collector's items among fans of
all ages for nearly a quarter
century and a favorite gift
item.
Made exclusively by the W.
Goebel Company of Bavaria,
West Germany, they are in
stantly recognizable by the me
ticulous craftsmanship, subtle
coloring, and the indented "M.
I. Hummel" seen on the base of
every piece.
The secret of these figurines'
appeal lies in their unaffected,
childlike, caught-in-action feel
ing. Be it a little girl clutching
a few wilted posies, a young
boy merrily on the way to mar
ket, or a child frolicking with
pets, their moods and manners
are typical of tiny people the
world over, and reflect the
timeless dreams of eternal
childhood.
Charm Seen
This wide eyed, ingenuous
charm emanates from the ar
tist's deep love and understand
ing of children. Berta Hummel,
whose original sketches have
been the basis for these ceram
fic figurines made by the W.
Goebel Co., was one of six chil
dren who grew up in a home in
Massing, Bavaria, where music
and art were as natural as air
and water.
Born in 1909, whe demonstrat
ed her talent and imagination
at an early age, beginning by
sketching and painting portraits
of her young school friends.
Throughout her formal art
training, including the Academy
of Fine Arts in Munich, Berta
Hummel continued her warm
interest in children, artistically!
as well as personally.
Convent Entered
An outstanding example of
the fact that art and religion
often go hand in hand, Berta
Hummel entered the Convent of
Siesscn near Salgau and took
her final vows as a Franciscan
nun in 1934.
In the convent, as Sister SI.
Innocentia. she continue in
make sketches of children that
have since made her and the
convent famous throughout the
worm.

lines from the original art were
given to W. Goebel in Bavaria,
where a skilled staff of artiste
began to translate the sketches
into the life-like, beautifully col
ored, hand finished figurines.
Designs Approve
When first manufactured. PV-
ery design was approved by Sis
ter Hummel. Now, a duly ap
pointed nun at the convent an
proves new figurines.
Each design is made with
painstaking care, from t h e
moulding of individual arms,
legs and other pieces; putting
them together by hand to make
tne one perfect unit: slow. can
ful glazing processes in various
jKilns, and meticulous hand col
ing. All this IS done bv crafts

particular phase they carry out
from Lme to time, new
