Local Unemployment Claims
Up Sharply; Weather Blamed
Although the Roseburg office
of the Oregon Slate Employ
ment Service experienced an in
crease in claims for unemploy
ment insurance during October,
the labor picture for the month
was quite favorable in some re
spects. Officials at the Roseburg of
fice said 752 claims for unem
ployment insurance were han
dled. This was a sharp Increase
over the September total of 296
but was significantly lower than
the 868 claims reported in Octo
. ber of 1652.

New job applications totaled
373 for the month, as compared

Officials said an average of
329 persons claimed a week of
joblessness during the past
month. This figure was com
pared with 263 in September
and 437 for the corresponding
month of 19G2.
The percentage of insured un
employment for the Roseburg
area was placed at 2.6 as com
pared with 1.9 four weeks ago,
4.4 one year ago, S.4 two years
ago and 8.0 three years ago.
Construction held up well dur
ing the month with the city of
Roseburg issuing SS permits
valued at $129,785. In the prcvi
mis month 61 permits valued at
$163,659 were issued and in Oc
tober of 1962 a total of 50 per
mits was issued valued at $179,
537.
The advent of winter Weather
normally indicates a decline in
employment and job opportuni
ties. It would appear that time
of the year has arrived, the of
fice stated. However, if the pat

tinues, the peak loads of last
year's unemployment may not
i be reached, .
Resolutions Studied

members at this week's meet
ing discussed at length five res
olutions which will come before
this weekend's Oregon School
Board Association convention in
Portland.

for whatever would be best for
Canyonville School District No.

district at the convention, ac

discussed various ways to in
form the parents of the limita
tions of the student accident in
surance and the functions of the
school district in this program
They also considered a request
from the PTA for a money-rais
ing activity.
