DEAR ABBY: My husband
loves to make things. He s made
ceramic ash trays and candy
dishes as pretty as anything
you can buy in the stores. And
he can fix anything. He's only
been through sixth grade but
I know if he had a Do-It-Your-self
dental kit he could fix
teeth. (Just mine and the kids'
he wouldn't go into business
or anything like that.) Are such
kits available? I heard' they
were, but when I wrote to Sears,
they took it as a joke.
MRS. 0. J.N,

The men and women with
college training! They always
have fresh ideas. Uncle Sam
will use them to hold our lead
in science, business and liv

We certainly need these
leaders, yes. But the cost to
train them has gone up. Col
leges are feeling the pinch.
Many need new classrooms,
laboratories, teachers.
To keep ideas coming, we
must keep our colleges go

DEAR ABBY: My wife toldl
me that she had been railroad
ed into the presidency of an or
ganization at the second meet
ing she attended. She said she
hadn't even paid her member
ship dues because she wasn't
sure she wanted to join the
club. She also said that when
her name was brought up for
president, she wasn't given
chance to say she didn't want
it, but was voted in unanimous
ly by a show of hands. I don't
want her holding an office in'
any clubs as she has two pre
school children and two in
school, which keeps her busy
enough at home. She says she's
afraid if she tells them she
can't accept the presidency,
her name will be mud in the
community which is all right
with me. What do you think?
MUD'S HUSBAND
DEAR HUSBAND: Tell your
wife to write the organization a
letter, explaining why she is
unable to do justice to the office.

tween a passive spade lead and
an active heart lead. Should
his partner hold five spades the
spade lead would probably be
the winner. That is a possibil
ity, but West is , looking at a
certainty. He does hold five
hearts and he should make the
normal lead of his fourth best.
Once he opens that fourth
best heart there will be no way
for South to make nine tricks
provided that the defense con
tinues properly.
South will duck the first heart1
in both hands and will have to
win the second heart in dum
my. Then he will lead a low
club from dummy and it will!
be up to East to play second
hand high and go right up with
the ace. This sort of play is a
great': strain for many .bridge
players and there are plenty of
occasions for a duck, but this
is not one of them. East can
see that he isn't going to set
this hand unless his partner can
produce a club trick and he
wants to be able to let his
partner make the club trick
after the heart suit is cleared
up and not before.
Once East rises with the ace
of clubs he leads his last heart
and while South can struggle
along and try. all sorts of com
plicated plays in the other suits
he is going to wind up behind
the eight ball.
