Oahs And Ahs!
By ABIGAIL VANBUREN -
DEAR ABBY: I am one waitress
who always waits on teen-agers
right away because I want to get
rid of them. They are surly, and
all they leave behind is a messy
table.
DOESN'T LIKE TEENS
DEAR ABBY: Put me down as
a waitress who enjoys waiting on
teen-agers. I find that, like any
other minority group, they behave
extra nice because they do not
want to reflect unfavorably on
the group they represent. Give me
teen-agers any time!
LIKES TEEN-AGERS
DEAR ABBY: My partner and
I own a small diner near a high
school. We had so much trouble
with the kids stealing things and
breaking up the place that we put
a sign in our window, "WE DO
NOT SOLICIT TEEN-AGE BUSI
NESS." A committee of parents
came in and told us we were
breaking the law to discriminate
that way. We took down the sign
and invited a few of the commit
tee to come in and watch through
the kitchen door, which had a
glass window in it. After they saw
what went on they told us to go
ahead and put the .sign back up.

DEAR ABBY: For my part I
hope I never have to wait on the
teen-age crowd again. For one
year I waited on tables where a
lot of teen-agers hung out and I
have had enough of them, thank
you. They order a cup of coffee
and expect you to keep it filled for
an hour. They hold on to one booth
no matter how many people are
waiting to sit down. And when they
Heave, their table and the floor
around it are a disgrace. Dozens

SICK OF KIDS
DEAR ABBY: I don't mind hav
ing one or even two teen-agers in
my drug store. But when three or
more come in together, they spell
trouble, and I never take my eye
off them until they are out the
door.
PROPRIETOR
DEAR ABBY: I run a hamburg
er joint and I couldn't stay in
business without the kids. I love
them. There are good and bad,
but I found out if you treat them
right they will treat you right, too.
So what if they do make a little
noise? I'd rather have them in
here yelling and screaming than to
have some old pusses who open ;
their mouths only to complain!
about something. Kids don't gripe
if the service is a little slow. And
I've never known a teen-ager to1
send anything back to the kitchen. 1

DEAR ABBY: It is strange that
when teen-agers come into my
place during the daytime, dress
ed in Bermudas and jeans, they
act rowdy and eat like pigs! But
these same teen-agers will come in
at night, dressed up in suits and

WASHINGTON (UPI) Dear I
! SI2G27:
I I'm afraid we're being out
' numbered. 1 checked with 20260
(the Post Office Department) and
I they claim they are getting more
' public cooperation than they had
I in the return address or in the
' mailing address.
One official at 20260 made a
"guesstimate" of around 20 per
i cent for the mailing addresses
and a little higher than that on
the return address.
The department expects those
percentages to climb after the
Christmas mailings because most
people update their correspond
ence lists after the annual influx
of Christmas cards.
And anyway it is the large
mailers that the department is
immediately concerned with. II

the response has been so favor
able they aro trying to speed up
development of a machine which
would sort ZIP-coded mail wiin-
out mortal aid.
As they expected when they an
nounced the ZIP code program,
most of the early enthusiasm for
it is coming from the large-volume
mailers such as insurance
companies, magazine publishers,
mail order houses and big com
panies that do regular billing.
At the outset the department
announced that it expected co
operation from about 79 per cent
of the 25,000 large firms that ac
count for about half of the na
tion's mail volume.
More than 80 per cent of these
firms that have been surveyed
since the program started have
reported that they are already
using ZIP code or arc converting
their mailing lists so they can.
As for letters to "Aunt Minnie" j
there is no official survey to
indicate how many personal let-
ters contain the ZIP code, either i
Using your ZIP code number is
essentially something the depart
ment wants you to do now so you
will be in the habit of doing it
when they complete development
of a machine that will read
these numbers and automatically
sort the mail.
Originally, development of this
machine was expected to take
about five years. Now they think
it may be in use before that.
The real area where the depart
ment feels it is making progress
beyond expectations is in public
awareness of the ZIP code.
