Hosiery Has Become More
Than A Covering For Legs
m t. suk j
THE DISCRIMINATING TOUCH of elegance and fashion
with superb craftsmanship in a mid-heel, creation by
Caressa is shown obove. The matching handbag is by
Theodore. Handbag and shoes, in copper jubilee patent,
are both an exclusive of Gimre's Shoe Store.
Hosiery is an integral part of
the coordinated fashion picture this
fall. And the big news is texture
for daytime, sexy by night.
Legs that haven't worn textured
stockings since they skipped to
school will be clad this year in
cable knits, in ribbed knits, in two
tones and colors, ranging from
heavy country-in-the-city weights
to lighter stretchy seamless, but
always thickly textured to coord
inate with the sportive look that
has swept the fashion field like an
avalanche.
For wear with tweed suits, for
example, there are fuzzy mohairs,
snowflake patterns, tweedy knits
and stripes, as well as the classic
ribs and cables.
And added to the wide range of
choice this fall are new tights and
panty-hose, knee-highs and thigh-
highs, in wild and wonderful col
ors and weaves that add an ex
citing, fresh new look to the over
all hosiery picture.
Some knee-highs go Oliverish,
narrow ribbed and cuffed, copied
from the English school boy and
giving a real snap to boyish, vest
ed suits for casual wear.
Fall Robes Star In Exciting
Galaxy Of Style And Fabric
And with the skinny, slinky
blacks that are so important in the
fall fashion picture after five, there
are even more Femme Fatale
looks.
Jet blacks and charcoals are the
major colors for this mood, with
jewelled clocks and butterflies, jet
ornaments, tailored clocks and col
ored clocks to add sparkle after
dark.
Another sophisticated way with
hose, for either day or evening,
will be the new lacy mesh stretch
leotards, almost like dancer's tights
that make the legs look utterly
ravishing and beautiful.
Added benefits with these mesh
es in dark colors, is their slim
ming effect on legs that are a
little heavy.
And even the woman who has
discovered the comfort of support
hose for busy legs will find de
lightful new really sheer sheers
just recently made possible by new
textile developments and weaves.
So no matter how you want to
look this fall, sportive or sexy,
there are interesting and truly ex
citing new stockings to fit your
costume and your mood.

The call this fall will be, not
"Where's my bathrobe?" but (lots
more gaily) "What's my bath

'Easy Mobility'
Fashion Keynote
"Easy mobility", ... that is
the keynote of the new suits. Ap
propriate in town, perfect for trav
el, a well-groomed look for the
suburbs that fashionable suburban
ites have long advocated.
New fabrics tie in perfectly.
They are richly textured and
tweedy in wonderfully blended col
or or in monotones. There is
heightened dimension in tweeds for
a soft, lush surface. Checks, dom
ino or pincheck, whipcords, diag
onal ribs, loop mohairs, twilled
meltons and handsome raised otto
mans. An Anglo kid mohair is par
ticularly striking in oatmeal and
white.
Ever-favorite Chanel suits carry
ease and elegance into fall. With
classic trim of braid and piping
new-looking in contrasting tones
with blouse to match. Contrast is
important and often two off
beat tones are countcrpointed. A
mocha-gold pebble suiting with
fuschia blouse of wool or silk. White
mohair tweed with lining and
blouse of vivid cranberry wool.
STYLING THE FURS
Fur styles stress shape, whether
lean and natural or lightly fitted
at front. Capes and cape effects get
attention. Sleeves are standouts,
newly important, long and lovely.
For little furs, the shorter sleeve
shows up but adds shapely width
example, a chincilla jacket with
bubble sleeves.
Tall-crowned fedoras take prece
dence, some chin-strapped, some
with interesting stitching details,
some even foldable, but all giving
the wearer an irresistable dash and
nonchalance.
The Garbo slouch is back, too,
with its glamour and mystery, so
provocative with the deeply curv
ing brim, so very flattering to al
most every face.
And never have turbans been so
rich, so opulent, as they are this
year for late - day - in - to - eve
ning wear. The feel of the mystery
and seductiveness of the Far East
is captured in their swirling
folds, from the little draped shapes
to towering two-foot high creations.
Newest and most exciting of all
on the hat scene are the frankly
fabulous fake furs, done in every
thing from hoods and babushkas to
turbans to bouffant bubble cloches,
Almost leopard lines the brim
of a wide Breton for town, for ex

the pointed crown of a Garbo pull

had their influence, too, adding lit

set high and handsome "Coach

adding a dramatic Arabian influ
ence through all the hat shapes
from "Lawrence of Arabia".
Many important milliners have
gone mad for the Oriental-Arabian
influences. The fall collections

Pretty For 'After' Newest
Styles For Mother-To-Be
Pretty enough to wear after the

new maternity wear. Shifts,

a spirited selection for autumn.
Significant of the increasing trend
to maternity clothes that arc some
thing more than just comfortable

some top fashion designers have
included apparel for the expectant
in their regular fall lines. Others
have turned their attention to the

Changing Mirror Of Fashion
Reflects Easy Suburban Life
The ever changing mirror of
fashion reflects the influence of
free and easy suburban life this
iall, with trim, colorful learner
shoes leading the parade to this
casual kind of living.
Supporting a growing love affair
between the American woman and
garments of leather, fur and bulky
fabrics are mid-heeled, beautifully
textured leather boots, pumps,
moccasins and oxfords.
Leather sports even more sur
face treatments for fall, reports
Shoe Fashion Service of America.
Brushed or crushed, smooth or
suede, fine or heavily grained,
leather textures spell out the new
look in shoes whether you call
it suburban, sportive, country or
casual.
corned by today's many younger
than-evcr mothers.
Equally welcome is the news
that maternity wear is turning
away from "discreet" and often
dull colorings, toward the cur
rently fashionable hues. Leading
reds such as cranberry, hounds
tooth checks and bold plaids, as
well as soft browns, charcoal
grays, menswear stripes and her
ringbones, brighten waiting days.
For the variety that a waiting
wardrobe needs, maternity wear
adopts autumn's layered look. Most
smocks and jumpers are made to
be worn with other fashion ingre-
shirt-drcsses, shirts.
Soft Leather Boots
Girls' Best Friends
For school or play, the ankle
high or higher leather boot is a
girl's best friend. Soft, light and
pretty on the foot, the "sportive"
leather boot gives her a sense of
fashion while it protects her in
changeable fall weather.
As popular with little girls as
with their teen sisters and mothers,
leather boots come in every height
to set off bright plaid skirts or
long slim pants.
At the low end of the scale is the
bootlet with a high-rising tongue,
one or two-eyelet tie and soft
brushed or grained leather. The
bootlet is as low in back as the
oxford.
The next size boot which reaches'
for the ankle but doesn't quite
make it is higher in back too and
often has a folded cuff in a dif
ferent shade or texture- of leather.
The high boot with its natural
wool shearling lining, leather sole
and over-the ankle topline is an
all-weather shoe.
CHARMING REPTILES
Reptile-charming is part of the
art of fall fashion, as accessories
utilize alligator and lizard, real or
fake, for everything from shoes
and handbags to jewelry and little
vests.
Standard-bearer of the suburban
look is the leather boot, higher and
handsomer than ever. In smooth,
grained, brushed and waxy leath
ers, the boot and its sister, the
boot shoe, belong everywhere at
home, outdoors, shopping, partying.
Shearling lined, it's a buffer
against wintry blasts. Lined in
smooth leather, boots and demi
boots brave the dements or relax
indoors with equal comfort and
grace.
Among style features bringing
great variation to the boot look
are angled toplines, buckle-and-strap
treatments, gored inserts,
textures and colors. Leather demi
boots, ending just at the ankle,
come cuff-appliqucd, or laced up
front or sides. 1
For daytime, footwear is as di
verting as it is diverse. There are
pert waxy leather moccasini;
smooth leather spectator pumps,
sprinkled with perforations; and
grained leather ghillie-tics. These
team up perfectly with plaids,
tweeds, ghillio-ties and other ver
sions of the suburban look. .
Heels Are Mid High
Dress shoes travel' down two
paths. One group reflects the in
fluence of the casual shoe in its
construction and detailing. A more
traditional feminine feeling is ex
pressed in the second group, with
cutouts, straps, stripping and up
front detailing such as buckles and
high-rising tongues. Here the shal
low silhouette predominates, with
lowered sides and back-part. '
Whether the treatment is casual
or conventional, heels on dress
shoes tend to mid-height, either
set hack or curved. Favored finish
es include smooth, suede, luster
and patent leather and reptile.
Shoe colors suggest earth, stone
and woods. Browns and tans are
important in all finishes, from
honey shades through warm medi
um browns to the reddish brown
called "Bitters." Darkened greens
and reds arc widely used, and mus
tard, dashed with brown or green,
is new in smooth and brushed
leather and reptile.
Leather ncutrnls on the order of
putty, fawn and gray-green add
subtle fashion accents to colorful
fall costumes.
SKI LOOK IN P.J.'S
Fall and winter sleepwear will
highlight ski-inspired knit ideas via
Scandinavian patterns, turtlenecks.
This fall will also find a new team
for sensible comfort which com
bines a classic pajama with a
shave or sleep coat that will ap
pear with long sleeves. The Orien
tal styles will bow in for fall in
more subtle fabrics, also in a wid
er range of prices.
