Drain Woman Back Home From Alaskan Motor Cruise
Community News Briefs
Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Thorndike
of Astoria were recent visitors in
ltoseburg and enjoyed a visit to
Lane House during their stay. They
arc directors of Flavel House, As
toria museum which was original
ly the home of a sea captain. They
were interested in covered bridges
in the area, and it was pointed
out that only five remain in Doug
las County.
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin White of
Los Gatos, Calif., have been visit
ing for a few days with friends
and relatives in the area. They
have been the house guests of Mrs.
White's son-in-law and daughter,
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Erskine. The
Whites formerly resided here, and
both were employed for several
years at the News-Review. White
is currently working for the San
Jose Mercury-News.

Mrs. Preston Parish of Freder
icksburg, Va ' recently visited
Roseburg, Douglas County's Lane
House in particular. She was a
guest of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Mi
cells during her stay. Mrs. Parish
has for many years been connect
ed with the restoration of Williams
burg, Va., and while she enjoyed
our museum, made the comment
that she was disappointed with
Orcgonians for their failure in rcal
izating that restoration of state his
toric places should be taking place
now. Mrs. Parish is traveling all
over the United States, gathering
material for a book she will write
about the history of the west.

first and third Sunday afternoons
of each month with the next meet

have returned to their home after
spending the summer in Ashland
where Mrs. Hartriek attended sum
mer school at Southern Oregon
College. She teaches in the Camas
Valley high school.

land, Calif., are visiting at the

Fencing In Offing
Fencing of the new acreage will
be done right away. An unexpected
item not budgeted for was the in
stallation of a complete new drain
age field for the septic tank, at
a cost of about $2,000. ,
An additional water supply for
the Tiller School is in the plan
ning stage with the new supply to
be added this fall, according to
Supt. Gerald Hcibel. , .
Installation of new drain troughs
and downspouts on the gymnasium,
roof repairs and painting of the
exterior of the gym were completed
earlier in the summer.
At Tiller the entire exterior of
the building was painted, a new
roof put on the south wing and
accoustic tile installed on three
walls of the lunchroom with the
room also being repainted. Avery

ler lunchroom work

Olscn, all of Coos Bay, and a
friend Lcroy Rice of Coquille drove
to Cold Beach recently where they
took the boat trip up the Rogue
River to Agness. Before returning
to Gold Beach they had dinner at
the Singing Springs Ranch.

Mrs. Russell Harwood and daugh
ter, RuSelle, of Camas Valley and
her son, Stephen, from Central
Point and Mrs. Wilmcr White, also
of Camas Valley, spent the week
end in Portland.

ning with Mrs. Hazel Pelzer, a
former Camas Valley school teach
er. Mrs. Pelzcr's sister, Mrs. Pearl
Qualcy, who now teaches here and
who recently returned to Portland
from Minnesota, joined the group

meeting of the Common Council of the City 1
of Roseburg, Oregon, held August 12, 1963, .
the following resolution was adopted:
"RESOLVED, that the Common Council of 5
the City of Roseburg, Oregon, deems It tx-.
peaient and necessary to Improve N. E.
Freemont Avenue between N. E. Jackson
Street and N. E. Nesh Street in the following
manner:
1. By grading the street to proper sub
grade. 2. By constructing concrete curbs and
gutters on both sides ot said street

curb.
3. By grading the right of way and
surfacing with esphaitic concrete to
width of 31 feet, gutter to gutter.'
4. By constructing sub-drains.
5. By constructing five foot wide con
crete, sidewalks on both tides of said
street.
Said Improvements are to be made In ac
cordance with the Charier and Ordinances of
the City, and the grades, plans, specifica
tions and estimates of the City Engineer
filed In the office of the City Recorder on
the 12th day of August, 1943, which said
grades, plans, specifications and estimates '
are hereby approved and adopted. The esti
mated cosls to be borne by the City for
providing drainage, Intersections and en
gineering are $2,7)1.40.
The balance ot the cosls of said Improve
ments, Including Interest and all other ex
pensci which the City of Roseburg would
not have incurred except for the making of
said improvements shall be levied upon the ,
property especially benefited thereby, as
provided by the Charter of the City.
That the Improvement' warrants Issued in
payment of such expenses as may be in
curred in making this improvement, be and
hereby ere declared to be general obligation
Improvement warrants as is provided In
O.R.S. 287.503. The estimate of the City
Engineer of the probable cost of said Im
provement Is the sum of 15,679.34 which
shall be borne by the benefited property.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the
City Recorder be and she hereby Is directed
to give notice of the Intention to construct
and install said sewer as provided by the

proper Installation and Inspection.
