GRAND CHAMPION Angus hull last year was shown by his owner, WiJIard Powell of
Cheshire. This onimal in tne open closs is indicative of the high caliber entries in open,
FFA and 4-H competitions.
Illllliil,
ADDING A LILT and a laugh to the step of fair goers this
week will be Gino and Genie, strolling organ grinders, with
real monkeys. They will roam through the grounds during
the five days of the fair as did the German band last year.
Competition Keen
in 4-H, FFA Tests
Competition for ribbons and
cash prizes at the Douglas County
Fair isn't just limited to bringing
an animal or a newly-made apron
to be judged.
Much of the activity calls for
displays of skills right before the
judges. One of the most grueling
of these contests is the 4-H Dol
lar Dinner competition. Young 4-H
cooks must prepare a nutritious
meal from the menu itself to the
finished product, which costs no
more than $1.
In the past two years, young
future homcmakers have been sur
prised to find one of their guests
to whom they must serve their
meal was the governor himself.
Four-H events and contests in
cooking, sewing, etc., will be con
ducted this year in the 4-H exhibit
area in the exhibit building, be
ginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Livestock events will be carried
on at the livestock arena for 4-H
and FFA .participants from Doug
las County.
Frank von Borstal and Maxine
Johnson, who are in charge of
4-H club work the year around,
will be in charge of these activ
ities for youngsters.
CARNIVAL RIDES
West Coast Shows will be" back
this year with its carnival for the
five days of the Douglas County
Fair. At least 15 mechanical rid
ing devices, major rides and chil
dren's rides are planned. Among
the most popular are the Mad
Manse, Scrambler and Meteor.
Livestock Big
Part Of Fair
Of course, one of the key fea
tures of the Douglas County Fair
will be the livestock exhibits.
Vying for ribbons will-be owners
of animals in both open classes
and 4-11 and FFA classes. All
open class departments arc open
to residents ol Douglas, Lane,
Coos, Curry and Josephine, Jack
son and Klamath counties.
Four-H and FFA classes arc
limited to Douglas County. These
4-H and FFA entries arc the heart
of the fair, -in the final analysis,
because the fair was launched as
a lair for youngsters in these or
ganizations only. The open classes
weren't allowed in until about a
decade ago, when fair expansion
began intensively. -
The animals in the classes men
tioned will be housed and judged
in the livestock pavilion and the
horse barns. Pen space is pro
vided in tho spacious livestock pa
vilion, and the horse barns next
to Umpqua Park provide 02 box
stalls and .70 tie stalls. Even with
Hie expansion of the livestock pa
vilion,' all space is expected to
be taken.

Rotary Auction Planned
. One of the highlights of the Doug
las County Fair every year for 4-H
and FFA stock raisers is. the an
nual Rotary Livestock Auction.
The Roseburg club has made a
tradition of staging the auction to
give the young raisers a chance to
show off their animals and deter
mine their worth before an appre
ciative audience which recognizes
the work they put into their ani
mal projects.
In many cases the bids on the
prime- animals far exceed the
market prices. Supermarkets of
the area vie with each other to
claim the top hog, sheep or beef
animal. These lop animals are

Last year, an interested specta
tor at the auction was Gov. Mark
Hatfield. When he was finally rec
ognized, after having stood incon
spicuously in the crowd, his cam
paign manager for Douglas County
bought a prune lamb and present?
ed it to the governor and his fam
ily. Without the auction, the young
animal raisers would have to sell
their products to slaughter houses
and meat packers for no more than
the market price. Frank von Bor
stal, county 4-11 extension agent,
reports the auction has the quality
of boosting the spirits of the young
people when they see they not only
win ribbons for their animals but
buyers are willing to pay top mon-.
ey for the best. ,
The auction will take place Sat
urday afternoon. (Sec schedule).
