Albany Merchants
In Doubleheader
Sunday was a banner day for
the Roseburg Bees as they came
home from Albany with their first
twin sweep of the season.
The Bees displayed a strong
attack at the plate to dump the
host Merchants by scores of 6-4
and 14-5 in a pair of seven inning
games.
Sunday's double win gives coach
Jerry Droscher's crew a 9-2 record
for the season. Tuesday the second
Roseburg Legion crew will invade
Lowell for a twin-bill starting at
5:30 p.m. Lowell is a member of
the Summer High School League
in Lane County.
Albany scored first in the open
ing game when Gary Stark walk
ed, Roger Holmes doubles and
Tom Holbert singled.
The Bees moved into the lead
in the fourth with a two-run upris

Roseburg Swimming Team Drops
Close Decision To Willamalane
The Roseburg swim team staged
a stubborn battle before falling to i
the invading Willamalane team of
Springfield Saturday in the first,
home dual meet of the season.
Willamalane ended the meet with
281 points, while Roseburg racked
up 226 points. These point totals
included the diving events. In the
regular age-group swim races, the
score favored the invaders, 251
204. Betty Zeigler turned in a sterling
performance for the local crew in
the girls 9-10 bracket. Miss Zicg
ler won firsts in the 40-yard free
stvlc, 40-yard breaststroke, 40-yard
butterfly and was on the winning
relay team. Laurie Hicks captured
the 40-yard backstroke event in the
same category as the only first
won by Willamalane. was in the diving-

Brian Stulls doubled up with vie
tories in the boys 11-12 40-yard

loaded the sacks. A pair of sacri
fice flies by Chuck Dornsife and
Gary Heeter drove the run across.
In the sixth the winners explod
ed for four more counters. Shep
herd singled and was sacrificed to
second by Young. Dornsife collect
ed a base rap, Heeter slapped a
double and Mike Cashner and
Butch Watson singled to give the
Bees a 61 lead.
The Merchants bounced back
with three runs in the bottom of
the seventh on two walks, a throw
ing error, a fielder's choice and
Holbert's double. However, the
rally was two runs short as the
Bees held on to post the win.
Rusty Hubbard went the dis
tance for the Bees to collect the
victory, striking out five and walk
ing four. Young and Heeter had
perfect 2-2 records at the plate, j
in tne second game tne Bees
started the route in the third in
ning with a single run, then racked
up four more in the fourth. The
fourth inning rally came on two
walks, a fielder's choice and suc
cessive singles by Person, Shep
herd and Young.
Roseburg added six more runs
in the sixth frame on four hits one
error, three walks and two sacri
fices. Watson, Pat Long and Shep
herd had singles, while Dan With
ers clobbered a two-bagger.
Three insurance runs crossed the
plate for the Bees in the final
stanza with hits being collected by
Shepherd, Young and Jim Coon.
The Merchants picked up two
runs in each the fifth and sixth
frames, after getting a single tally
in the fourth.
Long worked for six innings be
fore tiring and giving way to relief
hurler Doug Matson. The talented
youngster struck out eight and is
sued seven walks with most of
the free passes coming in the fifth
and sixth frames.
Young continued to be a tiger
at the plate with a 3-3 record in
the second outing, while Shepherd
was 3-5 and Long had a 2-4 record.

MOSCOW (UPI) Former Ore
gon star Dyrol Burleson led the
United States to a 1-2 sweep in
the 1,500-meter run in the final
day of its two-day dual track meet
against Russia Sunday. The U.S.
won the men's meet 119-114.
Burleson, using his familiar
come-from-behind style of run
ning, finished strong and overtook
Tom O'Hara of Loyola of Chicago
to win in 3:41. O'Hara was second
in 3:41.3.

and fearless Floyd Patterson, ad
mittedly in the best physical and
mental condition of his career,
will try tonight to stretch his rec
ord to three-time heavyweight
king in a return title fight with
champion Sonny Liston.
A victory by Patterson would
knock Liston out of a "seven-million
- dollar fight" with Cassius
Clay at Philadelphia Sept. 30.
"I feel more relaxed than at
any time since I first won the
title seven years ago," explained
28-year-old Patterson at the Dunes
Hotel, after driving in from his
quarters at the Hidden Well Ranch.
The massive, muscular Liston
of Chicago was favored at 5-1 to
keep his 'title before a sellout
crowd of 7,691 paid spectators in
the Las Vegas Convention Center.
A record Nevada gate of more
than 5280,000 is assured, promoter
Al Bolan said.
The betting was practically on
a par with a United Press Inter
national poll of 64 sports writers
here in this gambling metropolis.
Thirty-year-old Liston was favored
by the poll, 51-13.
That the bout was not expect
ed to last its scheduled 15 rounds
was emphasized by the fact that
all 51 votes for Sonny were on
knockouts and nine of the 13 for
Patterson called for kayocs.
Liston was a lopsided favorite

won the. national AAU decathlon
title at Corvallis last month, fin
ished third in the decathlon be
hind Vasilv Kuznetsov and Ana-
toly Ovscycnko of Russia. Pauly

LA Dodgers End Successful Rood Venture
With Six Game Lead In National Leaaue

umpire-baiting? Your team lost a
doubleheader and you were hit in
the face with a beer container?
Chin up. Walter Alston, your
Los Angeles Dodgers are leading
the National League by six
games and you have a nine-game
home stand coming up.
Despite 7-2 and 13-f losses to
the Milwaukee Braves Sunday,
the Dodgers wound up their suc
cessful road trip with a 10 -t
mark, giving them a six-game
lead over the St. Louis Cardi
nals. When the road trip began,
the Dodgers held only a three
game lead over the San Francis
co Giants.
The usually Quiet and re
strained Alston, with the Dodg
ers' disastrous collapses of the
past two seasons indelible in his
mind, was ejected in the sixth in
ning of the first game by um
pire Tom Gorman. In tho first in
ning of the nightcap, umpire Stan
banuos gave the Dodger manag
er the thumb. And then a Mil
waukee fan belted Alston with a
paper beer container.
