Diamond Lake Was Popular
Spot For Holiday Visitors
Diamond Lake proved to be one
of the most popular recreation
spots in the stale for the Julv 4th
holiday as a total of 6.6U0 visitors I
were reported by Dick Piatt, as-1
sistant ranger of the Diamond'
Lake District. ,
Piatt added that 450 boats were
on the lake Thursday and 2,000
cars were counted. i
Overcast skies and cool weath
er prevailed, according to Glide-
correspondent .Mrs. Arthur Selby.
The temperature reached 50 de
grees, with the water surface
temperature reported at 60 de
grees and the bottom temperature
being 57 degrees. i
Fishing was excellent with an
average of 2.5 fish per angler be-!
ing caught.
The campgrounds at Diamond
Lake were filled to capacity by 7i
p.m. Wednesday, and reports in-i
dicate they are still full this morning.

Lemolo Lake fishing was report
ed excellent, with 465 persons and
100 boats present over the holiday.
Piatt stated that during the en
tire 1962 season only 51,000 fish
were cauKht at Diamond Lake.
while during the first six weeks of
this season a total of 108.000 fish
have bf-n taken by anglers.

Lovalist attempted to retake
Bunker Hill Thursday the
Fourth of July.
Police found a small British
flag draped at the base of the
Bunker Hill monument in Charles
town together with a hand-lettered
placard which read:
"Know ye by these presents
that the territorie is re-claimed in
ye name of his Imperial Majestic,
George Hi, king of Englande It
of ye American colonies.
"Further a bounlie of 1,000
pounds is herby placed on the
heads of ye notorious subversives
Washington, Jefferson, & Adams."
The proclamation was signed by
"Capt. Geoffrey Newleigh, York
shire Irregulars."

For Horizon Girls
Camp Fire Girls Camp Tyee on
the Unipqua River near Klklon
will be the setting Sunday through
Tuesday for the Southern Oregon
Horizon Club Conference.
Some 60 Horizon Club girls, sen
ior members of the Camp Fire i
t.iils organization, will gather
from councils in Medford, Klam
ath Falls, Eugene and -Roseburg.
Sliss Gwen Harper, director of Re
gion VI comprised of the north
western states including Alaska,
will be here from her headquarters
in Spokane, Wash., to take part in
the sessions. Also attending will be
Mrs. Oscar Amundson of Rose
burg, executive director of the
Umpqua Council of Camp Fire
Girls, and Mrs. Ivan Edwards, also
of Roseburg, council program
chairman. Executive directors
i from the visiting councils will also
be present.
Purpose of the gathering, ac
cording to Mrs. Amundson, is to
promote the effectiveness of the
Horizon Club program, iron out
program problems in workshops
and to have fun in a camp set
ting. Mrs. Hurtchel Davis, Horizon
Club adviser and also a registered
nurse, will be official nurse for the
conference. Elaine Johnson, Glide
High physical education teacher,
will be waterfront director. Herb
Crouse, engaged for the regular
summer camping sessions at Camp
Tyee, will be camp cook.
On the agenda besides work
shops will be a council fire, a
"skit night" for the opening ses
sion Sunday and a cookdut.
Evaluation sessions for the con
ference will be held at its close
late Tuesday afternoon.
Girls attending will have entire
charge of the activities, Mrs.
Amundson said, following the Camp
Fire program of delegating respon
sibilities to older girls in the program.

Reedsport Council
Approves Tax Levy
The Reedsport City Council has
approved an ordinance setting a
$62,787.83 tax levy for the 1963-64
fiscal year of city operations. The
action followed the formal budget
hearing at which no remonstranc
es were voiced, reports Dawn Pe-
seau, correspondent.
The levy is $855 in excess of the
six per cent tax limitation, as ap
proved by the voters at a special
election. The amount in excess is
caused by the interest payment on
the $25,000 library building bind is
sue approved by the voters.
The 1963-64 levy is about $27,000
less, than .that for the 1062-63 fiscal
year, City Recorder Irving John,
son pointed out. Completion of re
tirement of the sewer bond indobt
edness resulted in a drop in gener
al fund expenditures.
