of the nation's public schools now

more common in the South and

Aviatrix Jerric Cobh. 32. who
hopes to become the United
Slates' first woman astronaut,
said in Oklahoma City. Okla.,
"After three years I had more or
less become resigned to the fact
that since we were doing nothing
in this area, Russia would. The
longer we wait, the farther be

associate professor of education
at MucAlester College, St. Paul,
Minn. He palled school super i 11
tendnets in a nationwide sample
of 4,000 communities,

Thirty-three per cent of the
superintendents said that home
room devotional services were
held in all schools of their sys
tem. An additional 17 per cent
said such services were held in
some schools of their community.
Kegional variations were strik
ing. In the South, 88 per cent of
the superintendents reported
home-room devotional exercises in
all or some of the schools under
their jurisdiction. In the Kast, 80
per cent reported sueji exercises.
But unly 25 per cent of the super
intendents in the Midwest and 9
per rent of those in the Far
West did so.
In reply to a specific question,
12 per cent of the school superin
tendents said Bible reading was
conducted iu their schools. There
was a high correlation between
these replies and those concerning
homeroom exercises, suggesting
that Bible reading normally is
part of an opening "religious pro
gram" which usually includes
prayer and possibly the singing of
a hymn.

down regulations were extended
Monday to the entire coastal area
from Westlakc north to the Co
lumbia Itiver, the Stale Forestry
Department announced.
Closedown regulations are now
in effect for the Coast Range and
the Cascades generally from the
southern border of l.anc County
to the Columbia mver.
The regulations make it man
datory to halt forestry operations
when the humidity drops to 30
per cent.

ton, Episcopal bishop of Washing
ton, said the court decision
"clearly opens the door for an in
creased emphasis upon our re
ligious heritage as a regular part
of the public school curriculum."
Ono of the great concerns of
religious leaders has been that
banning prayer and Bible reading
might iead to a total silence on
the part of the public schools
about tlod. The objective teaching
about religion, which was en
dorsed by the Supreme Court
majority, could resolve that
problem.
The court majority went to
great pains to knock down the
belief which has been advanced
by a number of religious lenders
and some historians and constitu
tional lawyers that the Kirst
Amendment merely forbids the
government to show preference to
one religion over another. The'
have argued that this was all the
founding fathers had in mind,
But the majority opinion assert
ed sharply that "such contentions,
