STOCKPILING STOPS
WASHINGTON (I'PD "Kxcos-
sive stockpiling ol sugar nas
stopped and a decline in supply
has set in, the Agriculture De-i
partment said Friday,
The agency said that during the j 5
week ended June 8, the primary
ie uuuat
distributors reiiners, processors,
and importers of refined sugar
sold only 134,571 tons. This was
the lowest sale in a single week
since February, and compared to
176.526 tons in the previous week
and 211,869 tons in the correspond
inc week lasl year.
The sharp rise in the price of
Sueur during April and May was
attributed primarily to the exces
sive buying which took place in
anticipation of higher prices, the
department said. The prico of raw
sugar lias dropped substantially
since reaching its peak on May
23. On June Hi, it was 8.5 cents
a pound, compared with 13.2 cents
a pound on May 23.
