Hatfield Asks

spokesman for Oregon Gov. Mark
Hatfield asked recently that Con
gress add $721,000 to President
Kennedy's budget for navigation
projects in Oregon.
Thomas J. Murray, port con
sultant to the state, made the re
quest during a brief appearance
before the House Public Works
Appropriations subcommittee.
He said Hatfield supported
budgeted navigation projects total
ing $4,311,000, but also recom
mended addition of funds for sev
en projects.
The additions would include
$543,000 for a deeper navigation
channel in the Coos and MiUicoma
rivers, which Murray said would
result in big savings to lumber
mill operators.
Murray said approval of plan
ning funds for a project to deepen
the Willamette River and to re
sume planning on the Willamette
River Falls lock project would
expedite construction of the au
thorized projects. Tha amounts re
quested for the two projects were
$46,000 and $85,000.

Jackson, Miss,, of NAACP state
field secretary Medgar Evers.
"The assassination of Medgar
W. Evers demonstrates anew tho
blind and murderous hatred
which obsesses too many Missis
sippians. In their Ignorance they
believe that by killing a brave,
dedicated and resourceful leader
of tha civil rights struggle they
can kill the movement for human
rights. They cannot.
"Every Negro citizen has lost
a valiant leader in the death of
Medgar Evers. The entire nation
has lost s man who believed la
America and died defending Ha
principles."
