Famed Texas Youth Choir Due
For Roseburg Concert Monday

ster Youth Choir from the Oak!

The Westminster Choir, vouth!
from the eighth grade through the I
12th. is on tour through the West-i
ern States. The concert, June 10 at i
8 p.m., will present an opportunity!
for this congregation and their I
friends to hear one of the leading j
church youth choirs.
The choir has an enrollment of
over 100 and 75 are making the 18
day tour which includes singing
engagements in Colorado, Idaho,
Washington, Oregon, California and
Arizona. The director is William
C. Everitt, and Elian Smith is the
accompanist.
Tours Cover Country
For the past five years the choir
has spent the first part of June
touring the United States and has
presented sacred concerts en route
to New Orleans, Washington, D.C.,
California, Florida and Winnipeg,
Canada.
During last year's tour, while in
Atlanta. Ga., through the auspices
of TRAV (Permanent Committee
on Television, Radio and Audio
Visuals of the Presbyterian Church,
U.S.) the choir made a 30-minute
film, "What is Christmas?" which
received a wide showing through
out the United States during the
Attorneys For Jeannace
To Make Another Plea
SALEM (UPI) Attorneys for
Jeannace June Freeman plan to
ask the U.S. Supreme Court for
reconsideration of its rejection of
her appeal from a death sen
tence. The State Supreme Court said
Wednesday it had received the
highest court'i mandate turning
her down.
But it will not send the man
date to the Jeferson County Cir
cuit Court at Madras unless the
appeal for reconsideration is de
nied. The 21-year - old woman was
sentenced to die in the gas cham
ber for throwing a child to his
death in the Crooked River
Gorge.
The Jefferson County Circuit
Court cannot set a new execution
date until it receives the mandate.

Christmas season. The tape, taken
from the sound track of the film,
was requested for broadcasting by
coast to coast.
The Westminster Youth Choir
presents a weekly radio broadcast,
takes part in many special com
munity services, sings regularly
at the Sunday evening worship
service of its own church and ac
cepts as many invitations as possi
ble to present concerts in other
churches in the Greater Dallas
area. The choir meets regularly
for rehearsal each Sunday at 4
p.m. and has extra rehearsals
worked into the busy schedules of
these young people who are also
leaders in school activities, athlet
ics and various fields of endeavor.
Symphony Joint
Twice each year the choir pre
sents special music such as Du
bois's "The Seven Last Words of
Christ"; "Crucifixion." by Stain
er; Saint-Saens' "The Christmas
Oratorio," and "The Messiah" by
Handel with instrumental accom
paniment by members of the Dal
las Symphony Orchestra.
State Court Says
Cigaret Makers
Face Liability
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (UPI)
The Florida Supreme Court ruled
Wednesday that cigarette manu
facturers can be held liable for
injuries or death resulting from
use of their products.
The opinion was given In a
5250,000 damage suit filed against
the American Tobacco Co. by the
widow of a man who died from
lunj; cancer.
The widow, Mrs. Edwin Green
Sr., claimed her husband's fatal
disease was caused by the firm's
cigarettes.
The opinion was requested bv
the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of
Appeals in New Orleans and will
be considered when the court re
hears the case.
In an earlier ruling on Mrs.
Green's plea the appeals court
agreed with a lower federal court
that the tobacco firm could not
be held liable for Green's death.
But the appeals court agreed to
rehear the case and asked the
state court for an interpretation
of Florida law.

Schools Practicing 'Double Shift' Face
Reduction In State Recognition Status
SALEM (UPI) The State
Board of Education decided Wed
nesday to withhold its, "fully
standard" recognition from
schools which hold double - shift
classes.
Double-shifting is the practice of
sending half the students to class
in the morning and the other half
in the afternoon. '
Dr. Leon P. Minear, superin
tendent of public instruction, said
double-shifting because of over
crowded classrooms has been
more a problem in elementary
schools than it has in high
schools.
But there are Indications from
several communities that they are
nianninff such a nermanent plan,"
Dr. Minear said. "It will cheat
unnecessarily the youngsters in
these districts."
The board also ordered schools
to provide a program of daily
physical education for students in
all 12 years of public school edu
cation. High school students now
are required to take only two
years.
Principal Loiet Cat
Willard C. McKinny, Klamath
Falls High School principal, lost
his battle to have his teaching
certificate restored. The board
unanimously supported Minear in
his earlier revocation of the certifi
cate and refqsed McKinny's ap
plication for a certificate for next
year.
The decision has the effect of
removing McKinny from his job.
Minear revoked the certificate
several weeks ago on the basis
that the principal knowingly made
a false statement in his original
application. Specifically, he was
accused of failing to show that
he pleaded guilty to a morals
charge while a Minnesota school
principal in 1959.
About 20 witnesses appeared on
his behalf Wednesday, but a
spokesman for the board said an
other 40 or 50 telegrams were
received, "mostly negative."
In other action, the board grant
ed $25,000 for summer education
programs for migrants. The
classes will be conducted by the
Ontario, Hood River, Woodburn,
St. Paul and Monmouth-Independence
school districts.
Communist Court OK'd
A resolution urging teachers to
inform themselves and their stu
dents about communism won ap
proval, as did a source material
guide on communism for teach
ers. A secondary teacher education
program was approved at Reed
College in Portland. The approval
was for five years beginning
Sept. 1.

Dates Visit At Coos Bay
Chief Bill Triska, recruiter in
charge of the U.S. Navy's Rose
burg recruiting office, announced
today the USS Pluck, a Navy mine
sweeper, will visit Coos Bay June
11-12.

Twins Perish In Fire
PORTLAND (UPI) Three-year-old
twins, Patricia and Pat
rick Yaecr, died Wednesday in
a fire at their home here. Their
mother, Mrs. Teresa YaeRer, 3.
was hospitalized with body burns
and smoke inhalation.
Firemen said the children ap
parently died of smoke inhalation.
The blaze started in the kitchen.

in the common market: Poland,
Portugal, Spain, the United King-1

trade in wheat. This lessening of
world wheat trade stems from
the fact that big crops were
grown in 1962 in western Europe,
parts of Asia and Africa. Some
importing countries cut down
their buying in relation to their
stepup in production.
U. S. wheat exports in March
totaled '55 million bushels. So far,
this is the largest amount export
ed in any month during fiscal
1963. The monthly average of the
eight previous months was less
than 40 million buslyls.
