Carter-Benton Set
For Top TV Battle
NEW YORK (UPD Middle
weight contenders Rubin (Hurri
cane) Carter of Paterson, N.J.,
and George Benton of Philadel
phia will meet at Madison Square
Garden Saturday night in a na
tionally televised fight that fea
tures this week's boxing schedule.
Veteran Benton, ranked second
among 160-pound contenders by
the World Boxing Association, is
favored at 8-5 because of his com
bined skill and punch, his 47-7-1
record includes 27 knockouts. He
seeks his 10th straight victory.
The more colorful fifth-ranking
Carter, also a knockout specialist,
scored 11 of his 15 professional
victories by kayocs.
He probably would have been
favored to beat Benton had he not
been stopped in the sixth round
because of a cut right brow by
"Spoiler" Jose Gonzalez in his
latest bout, March 30. That was
his third defeat in 18 starts.
Saturday's winner will get an
other Garden TV fight on July 12
against contender Joey Archer of
New York, who last Saturday
night won a unanimous 10-round
decision over slugger Victor Zal
azar of Argentina in their Garden
TV fight.
Heavyweight contenders Zora
Folley of Chandler, Ariz., and
Bob Clcroux of Montreal are slat
ed for a return bout on Thursday
at Montreal. Policy outpointed
Cleroux at San Francisco on April
18, 1962, but Cleroux is favored
at 7-5 to win this time because of
Follev's knockout by Doug Jones
last Dec. 15.
Also on Thursday, at Rome,
Giulio Rinaldi of Italy defends his
European lightweight crown in a
15-roundcr with Erich Schocppncr
of Germany.
Former lightweight champion
Joe (Old Bones) Brown of Hous
ton, Tex., has another comback
fight on tonight with Joey Lopes
of Sacramento, Calif., at Sacra
mento. The week's boxing schedule in
cludes: TUESDAY: Sacramento, Calif
Joe Brown vs. Joey Lopes. New
York (Sunnyside) Luther Mur
phv vs. Joe Shelton.

gle engine karts and Orville Cor
nett topped the field in the Group
III races.
Out of town winners included Bill
Denny of Eugene in the Group I,
single engine competition and Jer
ry Condray of Grants Pass ran off
with top honors in the junior boys
division.
Condray had the fast time in the
single engine action with a :25.3,
and Steve Oakley recorded the fast
lap time for the dual engine karts
a blazing :24.5 clocking.
Several minor crashes marked
the afternoon's action. In the first
heat of the Group I races Ralph
Bicknell of Winston flipped his
kart. He quickly jumped back on
the machine and completed the
race, but was unable to continue
the other heats because of minor
injuries.
In the second heat of Group II
competition Ronald Denny of Eu
gene spun out and ran backwards
into the fence. He was not injured
and came on to finish the race.
Donna Brock and Jack McCan-
dliss, both of Eugene, were involv-;
ed in a three-way crash with Cor
nett in the second heat of the
Group III races. All were able to
re-enter the race. However, later
in the same heat Miss Brock and
McCandliss again collided, with
McCandliss going over Miss Brock'
kart and landing in the infield aft
er striking the woman in the shoul
der with a front tire. Miss Brock's I
kart went out of control and flip
ped over. Neither driver was se
riously injured.
The next races at the Tri-City
track will be held June 2. Time
trials will begin at noon with the j
races to start at 1 p.m.
